Women’s Pole Vault (Find coaches that can beat Bubka’s coaches!):
Yelena Isinbayeva has shown that both athletic—skill wise and mental—toughness wise, she still can eat likes of Stuczynski, Steiner, and Sauer (not to mention Schwartz) for breakfast. However, once the mental toughness is instilled in some or all of these ladies, it is likely that they will be able to compete against the Isinbayeva’s current challengers as well as their rare victory against the Russian and Polish Pole Vault coalition will become plausible.
What distinguishes the Russian and Polish female pole vaulters from others is that, at best, their personal coaches, and at least, their periodical advisors, are the same coaches that brought Sergheyi Bubka of the Soviet Union and Ukraine to greatness.
I do, however, dear to predict that by 2008 the women’s 6 meters will be 5.25 meters, and that during the Olympics, the main trouble will not be winning the competition in the women’s pole vault, but qualifying to the final. I can foresee that the North American women, at least the team USA will be back in the competition for the medals as well as that Japanese and Chinese women will challenge at least for the bronze medal, since the world championships this year will take place in Japan, and the 2008’Oympics will take place in China.
My prediction of the top 8 in 2008 is as follows:
2 Russians--2
2 Poles--4
1 (US) American--5
1 Chinese--6
1 Japanese—7
1 German—8
Why only one American? Because the mental toughness is the most difficult to build; it does take time and effort, and cannot interfere with other necessary mental skills of a professional athlete.

Men’s 60 m:
Shawn Crawford (6.56 s) won 60 men’s 60 m race; Maurice Green did fall at circa 25 meters and finished last. Other athletes are still in traditional hibernation—mode until the Olympic year’2008.
Men’s 600 m:
Breshawn Jackson, 1:11.48, beat Renny Quaw, 1:14.02, Trinidad and Tobago, and Pete Coley, 1:14.05, Jamaica, in the shortest middle--distance race (600 meters).
Women’s 60 m:
In the lackluster race (by the USA—standards), Angela Daigle-Bowen won in 7.25 seconds.
Women’s 60 m H:
In the ‘Master’s’ event, Gail Devers won in 7.86, over Hayes, 7.91, and Carruthers, 7.94, all of the USA. Perdita Felicien of Canada came in the 4th place in 7.96 being the lowest finishing athlete to break 8 seconds.

he list of the athletes shows that some events such as middle distances will be great, other such as 60 m will be very good, and some such as 400 m will be at the highest national level.
Men’s 800 and 1500 m races should be contested at the highest international level: Wilfred Bungei “the great meet man, but not a great world championships’ level competitor,” Som, the last season’s Latvian sensation Milkievich, native Jurado Zafara, and Kipchirchir Komen as well as another native racer, Fernandez Cerezo, are amongst the responsible.
The 3 K men’s event is also well seeded with 10 athletes with 3,000 m personal bests under 8 minutes, and with Fernandez Garcia leading the field with the personal best over 3, 000 m of 7:32.98.

I did not make real predictions for the men's middle--distance races.

Men’s 60 m race and 60 m hurdles are similar with respect to the participating athletes: the only star—level athletes in the men’s 60 m are Freddy Mayola and Francis Obikwelu. Lukasz Chyla and Matyic Osovnikar both want to improve their national records over 100 m to under 10 seconds (all Chyla needs to do is go 0.01 second faster than another Pole, Marian Woronin did, in 1984, 10.00) – they may prove a very tough competition, most especially indoors, to Mayola and Obikwelu. Kuc is another Pole in the starting line up, but he is of the constitution of the surprise winner in the slowest 100 m race in the world championships over the last 10 years – he is too skinny: if he achieves the very peek of his abilities without putting some muscle on the bones, he will hit the wall at about 10.10 seconds with no wind. Dwayne Grant, the Brit, should compete with Kuc for the 5th place. I do not see, in spite of his recent improvement, Kael Beccera of Chile or Santos Abad being factors in the event, but Emodelu Uchena may be coming closer to his top shape, and pull a surprise. The rest of the exclusively Spaniard dashers should provide background as they try to improve to catch up with the European—elite level athletes.

I was wrong: Becerra won over both ma favorites Mayola and Obikwelu; however, as I did predict both Mayola and Obikwelu fought hard against each other, and finished in the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. In fact, it is possible that they disregarded Becerra as I did in my prediction. Becerra won in 6.61 seconds, and two fastest runners—ups finished in the identical times of 6.62. As to Chyla, he must have been trying too hard to achieve the Polish national federation’s minimum for the upcoming European Indoor Championships because he finished in the disappointing 6.69 seconds just behind Uchenna (6.68, 5th place). Dwayne Grant was dead last in 11 seconds – he must have stumbled, and Kuc did not even make the final. Rodriguez Garcia of Spain was the fastest of the runners who missed the top—three finish, in 6.66, he took the 4th place.
I would give myself: 2 out of possible 10 points (1 point for predicting a medalist right; 3 bonus points for predicting the gold medalist right, 2 silver medalist, and 1 the bronze medalist--10 points for predicting them all right).

60 m—hurdle race’s only star is Anier Garcia, a champion who seems to be on his way out of the world elite. He may be challenged by the Spaniards, Quinonez Vermaza and Vivancos Riuz, as well as by the Brazilian, De Souza. The Czech Svoboda as well as the two (US) Americans, Herring and Hughes, may challenge to be a surprise winners (the US athletes traditionally run slower on the European Meet Circuit than back home). Paulo Villar, the Colombian, together with Lavanne of France, and Kiss of Hungary look like the longest shots to win the race – self bias is a factor.

Men’s Shot Put will be a premier event: it seems that the Americans (Hoffa, Cantwell, and Taylor will all stand on the winners’ box, and collect checks)
Mikhnevich of Belarus and Martinez Gutierrez, the native of Spain, seem like only two athletes who can threaten the American sweep. Majewski of Poland will look to get in touch with the global elite by improving his personal best to over 21 meters. There will be three more native athletes either providing back ground or gaining experience.

Women’s 800 m, Kotlyarova and Cherkasova will duel each other and try to break 2 minutes in 800 m for the very first time this year. Benhassi of Morocco will try to grab the victory for herself.
Kolarova of Bulgaria, Setowska of Poland, and Cusma of Italy are most likely still trying to qualify for the European Indoor Championships or getting in shape for the event.

I was right only about Benhassi. Kotlyarova did disappoint, and Cherkasova did not show up for the race. Hasan Benhassi won easily in over 2:03, and Setowska-Dryk and Cusma took the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively in over 2:05 each.

The women’s 1500 m race will be most likely lead by Kandemir and Rodriguez Longo, but it should not provide any fire works.

Kandemir and Rodriguez—Longo did disappoint. Instead, young and hungry of international recognition women won the race: the youngest was Sylwia Eidys of Poland, 22 year old runner, who was second in 4:13.61, Mayte Martinez Jimenez won the race for Spain in 4:13.56--beating the Pole 0.05 of a second, and Iris Fuenetes Pila Ortiz was third in 4:14.08.

Women’s 3 K will be in very essence a young athlete, trying to gain experience, event. With possible surprise from Bouchard and Asahssah, Domiguez Azpeleta, another Spaniard, should run to the victory by herself.

As I did predict Marta Dominguez Azpeleta of Spain did finish by herself in 8:48.84, but she did motivate another Spaniard, Dolores Checa Porcel, to bring her personal best over 3 K under 9 minutes – she finished in the second place in 8:59.03.

The women’s 60 m H will be at the highest level: three “sub--8—seconds—personal—bests—indoors” athletes include: Alozie Oluchi, Carruthers, and Onyia. The race should come down to the photo finish between Nigerian Onyia and the American Carruthers. The Spain’s athlete, Alozie Oluchi, should finish comfortably in the 3rd place. There should be a tough fight, taking place behind their backs, between the international and the Spaniard athletes for the 4th place.

When one looks at the results of the semifinals, one might agree with my prediction, but unfortunately the winner of one of the semifinals, in 7.99 seconds, the Nigerian, Josephine Nnkiruka Onyia did not participate in the final race. In her absence, Danielle Carruthers of the United States won in 8.01 seconds (she won her semifinal heat in 8.00).

Women’s High Jump
Slesarenko of Russia and Beitia Vila of Spain should decide the winner amongst themselves. Gyorffy of Hungary and Mendia Valencia of Spain will try to become world elite athletes by improving their personal bests to 2.00 meters.
Women’s Pole Vault
It would be a great test day for Schwartz of the team USA. If she cannot beat the athletes who are worse pole vaulters than her, she has no business taking on the world elite Russian or Polish pole vaulters, not to mention the world record holder.
I will not comment on the women’s long jump or shot put, since my knowledge of the events is too little.

Men's 60 m:
Jason Gardener and Craig Pickering did win both heats for the Great Britain in 6.58, and 6.56 seconds, respectively. Francis Obikwelu was the fastest of the runners—up in both heats finishing in 6.61 seconds. He will be the only non--British athlete to participate in the final. Osovnikar and Makrozonaris did not qualify.
Women’s 60 m:
Laverne Jones, ISV, was beaten by, the winner, Kim Gevaert, BEL. Gevaert finished in 7.22, her season best, and Jones finished in 7.23 seconds. Jeannette Kwakye and Joyce Maduaka, both British, did finish in the 7.30 seconds for the 3rd place, and 7.34 seconds for the 4th place, respectively.
Men’s Shot Put:
After “shamming” for a couple hours, Reese Hoffa won with a put of 21.12 meters; Dan Taylor was second in the competition (and 2nd amongst the members of the team USA) with a put of 20.83. Joachim Olsen of Denmark was third with a put of 20.44 meters.
