Hi. I was just checking to see if anyone out there has ever suffered a hip fracture (femoral neck to be specific) from running. I had pins placed in my hip in June, and am still on crutches and unable to exercise. I was hoping someone could give me some advice orsupport with this. I'm becoming very depressed from not being able to workout, and I really have nobody to talk to about this. Most of my friends and family are totally opposed to exercise (especially running), so they don't understand why these past 3 months have been so difficult. I'd appreciate any advice or encouragement! |

That sounds pretty rough. Have you been given any exercises you can do? One thing I always recommend for people that have to stay off their legs while rehabbing is the arm cycle. If you have one in a local gym or training room (they look like an upright bicycle seatback and pedals for your hands instead of the feet), 15-20 minutes on that is a great aerobic workout that shouldn't impact your hip at all.
Are pool workouts ok?

I've never had an injury that sever but I have had three stress fractures that required time off from runing. Be patient and keep in mind that you will heel and be able to run again. In the mean time, read running articles, follow your rehab schedule (if you have one), and keep as positive an outlook as possible. And since you don't seem to have much support there keep in touch with us and join in on any topic. It would be nice to have a ladies input. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I second Dan's recommendation of using a hand bike. They are definatly not as good as running but it's better than nothing at all. Also, can you get in the water? You could try water aerobics classes at you local gym. The water would probably make you light enough to take any wieght off the hip and you could just avoid any of the exercises they do which require you to push off that leg. Of coarse check with your doctor or physical therapist before trying anything like that. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I am assuming you are undergoing physical therapy with the main thrust at retaining mobility and flexibility. I imagine with pins in place, that is difficult. Good luck with your rehab. |

I echo the sentiments on water and patience ... I have had injuries where training in the water reallly helped take the pressure off the joints ... Helps tremendously ...
And coming back from an injury too soon can lead ot further injury or possibly an injury that is worse than the first one ... Hang in there it WILL get better ...
