Not a Golden League meet, but one of the bigger meets of the year thanks to some strong fields .. These include a strong women and mens 100 .. A possible record atempt by ElG in the 1500 .. We also get a rare 200 meters race .. And a men's 400 that has Felix Sanchez (recently 47.37 in the hurdles) and Alvin Harrison and Ingo Schultz ... And Sanchez is also entered in the hurdles !!! The distances are all high quality and deep ... So this could be as exciting as Zurich - although there is that British weather ...

Coolish weather in London with potential thunder storms .. So results off just a little so far ... Sanchez wins 400H by .01 over James Carter in 48.07 ... Carter seems to e America's best these days as Angelo Taylor has underperformed - finishing last this time in 50.97 !!

Krummenaker proved his season is no fluke finishing second to Borzakovsky 1:44.78 to 1:44.89 ...

Upset special --- Briggitt Foster ahs again beat Gail Devers !!! 12.65 to 12.71 ... Not sure what has happened to GAil ... Perhaps too much hard training during that long period off ... Would appear that way on the clock at this point ...

Gail gets beat twice in a row?!

That's a might small margin of victory for Sanchez, but it keeps the streak alive... I had a bad feeling about Taylor when he started running the 400 at the start of the year because of how easy it was with no good competition... Sad

Has London had anything but cold and icky weather for meets this summer? I can get that staying here in the winter...

Gail is like Mo - they just haven't lost often in the pst few years ... But this is an of year ... Read a good article on Mo last night on the bbc web site ... Talked about various problems he has had this year off the track that has hampered his season ...

100 Heat Results:

100 METRES - Men - Heats - Heat 1 - Wind: -0.6 m/s

1 114 Maurice Greene USA 10.12 Q 0.148
2 47 Mark Lewis-Francis GBR 10.13 Q 0.151
3 92 Francis Obikwelu POR 10.14 Q 0.194
4 111 Shawn Crawford USA 10.21 q 0.169
5 113 Jon Drummond USA 10.23 q 0.134
6 119 Coby Miller USA 10.39 0.183
7 130 Abdul Aziz Zakari GHA 10.43 0.188
8 29 John Barbour GBR 10.46 SB 0.144

100 METRES - Men - Heats - Heat 2 - Wind: -1.1 m/s

1 33 Dwain Chambers GBR 10.12 Q 0.144
2 120 Tim Montgomery USA 10.20 Q 0.189
3 89 Frank Fredericks NAM 10.27 Q 0.141
4 110 Kaaron Conwright USA 10.34 0.150
5 126 Bernard Williams USA 10.35 0.135
6 103 Roland Nemeth HUN 10.64 0.143
6 55 Daniel Plummer GBR 10.64 0.155
8 40 Jason Gardener GBR 10.65 0.180

Interesting results ... Relects cold weather ... No call here ... Too close as I see these results ... Without seeing how the races were run ... Another Awesome field though ... And the best have seemingly made their way through ... Biggest surprise ot me is Williams not making the final ... Looks like his move from HSI was NOT a good one ... Neither he nor JJ Johnson has anything remotely resembling a decent season since their moves to work with Dennis Mitchell ... Apparently Dennis was relient on something other than technical prowess as an athlete ... :t-:

Americans are looking good in the speed events so far :

110 METRES HURDLES - Men - Final - Wind: -1.6 m/s

1 116 Allen Johnson USA 13.23 0.170
2 125 Larry Wade USA 13.26 0.144
3 46 Colin Jackson GBR 13.37 0.117
4 12 Duane Ross USA 13.45
5 82 Stanislav Olijar LAT 13.50 0.152
6 98 Shaun Bownes RSA 13.63 0.219
7 67 Florian Schwarthoff GER 13.93 0.142
8 6 Elmar Lichtenegger AUT 13.97 0.165

Good runs for Johnson and Wade considering the conditions ... Wade is beginning to look like the US heir apparent ...

200 METRES - Men - Final - Wind: -0.5 m/s

1 121 Darvis Patton USA 20.25
2 109 Ramon Clay USA 20.34
3 36 Marlon Devonish GBR 20.43
4 48 Christian Malcolm GBR 20.77
5 42 Dwayne Grant GBR 20.79 SB
6 90 Troy Douglas NED 20.82
7 7 Dominic Demeritte BAH 20.84
8 3 Patrick Johnson AUS 21.25

patton has had a solid season so far and my guess is going ot be the US representative at the World Cup .... Will be interesting to see how he performs given our recent history with our 200 reps at major meets ... Since 1996 only Mo has gotten things done with his win in '99 .. Outside of thta it has been one excuse after another ...

I stand corrected ... Marion put it to her !!!

100 METRES - Women - Final - Wind: -0.5 m/s

1 120 Marion Jones USA 10.97 0.176
2 268 Zhanna Pintusevich-Block UKR 11.11 0.137
3 273 Chryste Gaines USA 11.12 0.223
4 238 Tayna Lawrence JAM 11.17 0.174
5 204 Debbie Ferguson BAH 11.22 0.128
6 205 Kim Gevaert BEL 11.45 0.150
7 224 Joice Maduaka GBR 11.55 0.188
8 225 Abi Oyepitan GBR 11.56 0.174

That's what I call a psycholcogical whipping cause Zhanna has proven to run as well as Marion ran this race all season long ... This whipping took plaace in the mind, beforoe they got on the track !!!

Chambers is now this season's #1 ...

100 METRES - Men - Final - Wind: 0.5 m/s

1 33 Dwain Chambers GBR 9.98 0.142
2 275 Tim Montgomery USA 10.05 0.175
3 114 Maurice Greene USA 10.06 0.133
4 92 Francis Obikwelu POR 10.15 0.166
5 89 Frank Fredericks NAM 10.21 0.129
6 111 Shawn Crawford USA 10.24 0.167
7 47 Mark Lewis-Francis GBR 10.25 0.148
8 113 Jon Drummond USA 10.27 0.117

Same comment for Greene that I had for Devers (and probably fits Montgomery too) probably spent too much time on hard training during that long break !!!! None of those 3 sohwing the zip they had earlier in the season ... Although Montgomery did have it in the trials at Zurich last week ...

Like switching to adidas? Wink

Wow, very interesting results. Mo sure is struggling. He's always been able to summon sub-10's at will, but that isn't clicking this year. Those semis looked incredibly even. Chambers is one of those guys that always makes me question weather, wind, and altitude "adjustments" -- enough people seem to perform at their max level in bad conditions that it seems like how the athlete feels is infinitely more important than adverse or beneficial conditions.

That's gotta hurt for Zhanna. Heck, she barely held onto 2nd! Anyone know how the race unfolded? The times certainly weren't spectacular, but Marion finished with a large margin.

If Larry Wade could ever bust out of that 13.1 - 13.3 range, he'd be ready to take over the top spot. He's got the consistency, but he still seems a little too dependent on the big guns coming back to him with average times...

NO WAY !!! Sanchez does double ...

400 METRES - Men - Final

1 15 Felix Sanchez DOM 45.14 SB
2 115 Alvin Harrison USA 45.31
3 65 Ingo Schultz GER 45.46
4 32 Daniel Caines GBR 45.60
5 122 Antonio Pettigrew USA 45.84
6 88 Eric Milazar MRI 46.51
80 Hamdan Al Bishi KSA DQ
107 Leonard Byrd USA DQ

Again I look at Harrison and wonder what was going on during the break !!! Sluggish marks from otherwise high quality performing athletes ....

Has that double ever been done before in a large-ish meet?

Yes ... Harald Schmidt (formerly West Germany) used to do this double on ocassion .. He was 47.48 and around 44.80 ... He was also 1:44.xx in the 800 (PR escapes me at the moment) ... Was one of Moses main rivals and was his main foreign rival ...

Sounds superior to Sanchez's double. Quite impressive, nonetheless.

I've got him and Larry Wade...

Heck, from the results Conway posted, I would've had:

1 116 Allen Johnson USA 13.23 0.170
2 125 Larry Wade USA 13.26 0.144
1 120 Marion Jones USA 10.97 0.176
5 89 Frank Fredericks NAM 10.21 0.129
6 111 Shawn Crawford USA 10.24 0.167

I believe Higga also won the women's LJ and Pate was 2nd in the men's LJ, but I'm not positive. Oh well...

Yeah ... Isn't it interesting that more top quality athletes showed up here than in your typical golden league meet ??? Wonder what that says about the Golden League ???
