|

Right now I run once a day in the evening. I cant seem to burn off these last few pounds. Im just wondering if running twice a day (maybe alittle less distance) would be better for me. Or maybe running A LOT every other day. Just wondering... |

Unless you are *really* putting in mileage, it is difficult to lose much weight by running alone - at least that's my experience.
In my own case, running doesn't begin to control weight until I surpass 40 miles a week.
It is better, I believe, to combine a modified diet with exercise to reduce body fat.
The most straight forward diet approach I've found is simply to *eliminate* added fats and oils (butter, margerine, dressing), baked goods and sugar from the diet - while adding more fresh fruit, raw and steamed vegetables.
The above, combined with no less than 30 minutes (more is better) of jogging, five days a week, should start melting off the fat. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com |

I think Mike touched on the magic amount 30 minutes. If you want to go for two runs a day that is great but unless they're both at least 30 minutes in length then you'd be better off just doing a single longer run a day. Of coarse you shouldn't jump right into 7 two run days a week start with one and then add a day every other week.
I used running pretty effectivly to loose wieght I had what I called the 70 diet. If I ran 70 miles in a week I could eat whatever I felt like. If I didn't then for the next week I had to really watch what I ate until I topped 70. Now it doesn't have to be 70 miles, I'm a mileage hog and that numder is pretty comfortable to me. For you it might be 35 miles or 240minutes of any aerobic exercise or what ever. Just pick an amount of exercise that you are confident that if you do it will cause you to loose wieght. Another side effect of my diet was that I found myself watching what I ate even when I did get in my mileage just because with all that exercise I didn't want to throw it away. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

And for someone like myself with a sensitive digestive system, you'll find an added bonus is that you'll find it necessary to eat well in order to exercise, or you'll be rudely reminded...

I have a sensitive digestive system too. I need caviar, squab, roast duck, and, above all, spareribs to keep me happy . Makes me happy just thinking about it .
Actually, though, I awake about 4:45AM and drink coffee )espresso, but eat nothing at all.
The run starts at about 6:40 AM. When I return to the castle, I make a thick shake (about a quart and a half) from peaches, bananas, plain natural yogurt, ice and water. Oh, is that good!!! I don't eat again until about 1PM. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com |

Your sensitivities are a little different than mine... Try no wheat, dairy, or egg. (Has a Mexican dish ever been made without cheese?)

Actually yes, but probably never without cilantro.
Actually some of the meat dishes from the south are made without cheese, but they usually include chocolate (you heard that right). How are you with chocolate?
Also tamales are made without cheese. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com |

I've been on Bob Kennedy's diet for about the last five or six years. In an interview with RW a few years ago he said that while he was in college he lived on chips, salsa and beer. Throw in some Ramen noodles and that's about what's in my fridge. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I agree with Conway, Dan and quote Joggers Digest all in the same day. I must have gotten some bad Ramen _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

With my Russian/Austrian background, my idea of chips 'n dips is a big plate of radishes, green onions, boiled potatos and yogurt.
As a snack, I also enjoy jalepeno and tortilla sandwiches. Why do they call me Mad Dog Mike? www.training2run.com |

90 degrees, 95% humidity: if one of us started pooping out on a long training run, another would surely say, "Hey all y'all, if ya aint got the grit, ya don't get the gravy!"
Who ever said it at the time was always correct: after running 2 1/2 hours or better in that heat and hunmidity, all you had left to go on was "grit!" Mad dog Mike www.training2run.com |
