Something fun to do when the season is slow or out .. Answer and add your own .. Just be prepared to give the right answer ..
1. Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile .. Who ran the first sub 3:50 ??
2. Irinia Privalova (formerly World ranked at 100 & 200 and with a sub 50 PR at 400 meters) is considering a move up to the 800 .. What female sprinter (also previously world ranked at 100 & 200 and with a sub 50 PR at 400 meters) moved up successfully and ranked #1 over 800 meters ??
3. Jim Hines was the first sprinter to record a legal automatic clocking in the 100 meters under 10.00 with his 9.95 win in Mexico City .. Who had the second legal auto clocking under 10.00 ?? |

1) John Walker (NZL) 3:49.4 - 8/12/75, Gothenburg
What's that you say, I have too many resources at my disposal? Really, the details are all from memory...
2) My guess would be Jarmila Kratochvilova, but I don't know whether she had a 100/200 background.
3) If I'm not mistaken, Calvin Smith and his 9.93 in '83?

1. Yes, John Walker .. Not worried about your or anyone else's resources ..
2. Yes Kratochvilova .. PR's 11.07, 21.97, 47.99, 1:53.28 ..
3. Wrong answer Dan .. Please try again ..
4. Reynaldo Nehemiah recreated the all time list and record books in the 110 hurdles during the late 70's / early 80's becoming the first to run under 13.00 .. Who held the WR before Nehemiah's first lowering of the record ??
5. Simple question .. Who broke 3:49 first ?? |

2) Woo-hoo, what a guess!
3) Oops, I was thinking the next WR, not the next between 9.95 and 9.99. This could take a bit more thinking...
4) Alejandro Casanas. Wow, looking at the lists, Nehemiah took 0.28 off Casanas' record, when all was said and done.
5) That actually may not be such a simple question. Steve Ovett is shown as having run 3:48.8 in '80, but Seb Coe has a 3:49.0 in '79 that appears to be a 1500m converted to 3:48.95 and rounded up.

First of all I'm doing this off the top of my head .. You on the other hand are using your resources .. .. Hopefully others will join in ..
3. Still awaiting corect answer ..
4. Yes Casanas was correct .. I threw that one in becasue Anier Garcia who has been battling with the Americans teh last couple of years is the best from Cuba since Alejandro .. And a team mate of his is the answer to #3 ..
5. The answer is actually Ovett .. Coe's 3:49.0 was just that .. Ovett was next with his 3:48.8, then I believe (not using resources just my head here) that Coe came back with a 3:48.50 to get the record back .. Was the time when Coe and Ovett were at their rivalous best
6. In the "race" to break 38.00 in the 4x1, what team came closest without actually going under the mark ??
7. In the 4x4 the WR is typically broken in Olympic or World's competition .. Obviously becasue of the difficulty in getting that kind of talent together at one time .. What was teh last WR set in the 4x4 NOT set in Olympic or Worlds competition ??
8. In women's 4x4 competition what was the fastest split ever recorded ?? (have to test peoples resources) |

Well, I know better than to go head to head with you on trivia, especially sprints related, without bringing artillery.
Ok, I'll try answering a few without resources.
Uhh...
Anyone know the details of Coe's 3:48.95? Was it an auto time before that was accepted, or was it a converted mark that had to be rounded up for reasons of accuracy?

I'll have to go dig out my September 1979 issue of TFN cause I think that is where the details are, but if I am not mistaken his race was originally announced as 3:49.0 .. Not sure how it got to 3:48.95 .. So no other answers ?? No ther challengers ?? This was meant to be fun for all .. |

Sorry about that .. Got my first issue of TFN in 1974 (Steve Williams is on the cover) .. I was a soph in high school (10.8/21.9/49.6r) and Williams was my idol .. I started reading TFN then .. Have some intermittent issues from then til 79 .. But have every issue since the beginning of 1979 .. Of course they are all stored away and not easy to access .. But I have them and do retrieve them when I really need to ..
So when you have read every issue of TFN for almost 30 years your head gets filled with stuff ... .. And that doesn't include being on the net for about 8 years or so now .. So ergo my penchant for Track and Field trivia ... And with that back to it !!! Any answers anyone .. |

You do have a point, but I don't think it's just gh. No stat freak wants to be humbled by another stat freak, and the list has many such wannabes.

Yeah you have a point .. I try not to get into arguments .. But I hate when people try to pass off non truths as their knowledge ..
I guess it is pretty bad though when I know what issue of a magazine the results of a certain race should be in !!! .. Of course in my defense I do remember that Coe was on the cover of that issuer for his races over 1 mile and his 800 record ...
Unfortunately I think the track list has become more a group of people who want to protect their reputations as opposed to exchaneg ideas, stories, philosophy etc .. |
