Hello.. I'm 19 and I've been running for 3-4 years, and training hard since March. Last Thursday I rolled my ankel, being as careful as I am I took that Thursday Friday off from running. On Saturday I ran a 18:52(PB)5K on a hilly CC course, 12 hours later I was a gimp, hobbling everywhere.
My calfs hurt soo bad I can hardly walk, let alone run.. the pain comes from deep in my lower leg, it feels like they are both torn in the middle.
I took Sunday off, ran a tempo paced 3 mile on Monday, and a race on Tuesday. After the mile mark at the race on Tuesday the calfs kicked in and my legs couldn't keep the speed, I finished 19:24(not good considering my recent improvement.) After the race I honestly .. well I don't know how to say it except, it hurt like hell to move.. I could hardly make it to the bus ):
I thought the pain was only race day, but it was still there Wendesday. I made the mistake of going 9 miles, after about 6 my calfs kicked back in with the intense pain. I took Thursday off, and today I tried running to see how it feels. I made it about 2 blocks and I just couldn't keep going.
There are 3 races in the next 4 days.. All of them: I am not strong enough to sit out.. but what do you suggest? What is this pain and is it common? If I sit around I will loss everything I've gained in the last 6 months.
Well thanks for reading, hopefully someone has some advise.. THX!

First off you will not loose much by taking a few days off, especially when compaired to what you could end up being forced into taking off if you don't let yourself recover. It sounds like you've got a really sore soleous muscle. Try stretching it. This is done by doing normal calf stretches, only bending you knee. Also ice for up to twenty minutes after you run. You also might ask a doctor or team trainer about taking Aleve or Advil or some other such anti-inflamitory. For the next day or two try to cross train instead of running, swimm, do pool running, ride a stationary bike, something to let the injured area heal. Also how important are these races? The thing about cross country is that most of the regular season meets don't mean anything. No matter how well or poorly you do in them you still have to go through the city - district- regional races (or whatever equivelent quailfying races you have) to get to state. So look bug picture, do you want to run in a dual meet tommorow or at the regional championships down the road  _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

REST!!!!!
Learn from the mistakes of others (me) ... calves that sore are the fuse for a much larger explosion to follow...
Just like training through races is arguably pointless, running through injury pain in unimportant races doesn't make much sense.

If you feel like you're getting out of shape after a few days of rest, then it's largely in your head. It's highly unlikely -- to the point of near impossibility -- that you could lose conditioning that quickly. Just try to relax a bit and give your body time to recuperate. If you're that uptight about taking time off, you're probably mentally keeping yourself injured as much as physically...

It is physically impossible to get out of shape in three days. Unless your eating and drinking and enromus amount of garbage and not doing anything. I hate to tell anyone anything is mental but getting out of shape overnight is without a doubt mental. As for your right leg, these things take time. It won't feel better overnight but it is healing while you rest and that's the important part. But don't have anymore days of nothing, do something everyday, I encourage you to find a pool and swim or water run. How long do you have until you start having big meets, districts, regionals ect? _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |
