|

I know we've been over this before but the coverage of track and field meets held in Europe stinks! I was surprised when Conway pointed out that both Krummenacker and Teeter had won their races in Paris. I was sure I had read two different articles on US based news web sites and not seen them mentioned. So I went back to double check. And sure enough, not so much as a mention. It's enough to get a guy hot under the collar. And it's not like sporting events in Europe don't get covered on this side of the pond. Heck they show the Tour De France almost in its entirety over here. And maybe I'm being naive but I can't imagine that there are more cycling fans in the US than there are Track fans.
Okay I'm done venting and feel better now, any other thoughts? _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I pretty much gave up on going out of my way to watch track meets on TV in about '96. Too frustrating. Now that they're only being shown on ESPN (I don't get cable), that pretty much seals the deal.

NO CABLE!!!!! I knew Canada was another country, but I didn't beleive people from there were that different from Americans
I could live without every cable channel except ESPN, if I don't get my daily dose of Sportscenter.... bad things man, bad things.... _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I'm Canadian, but I'm not in Canada.
By the way, I believe it's TSN (Total Sports Network?) in Canada instead of ESPN, although I'm sure ESPN is available by satellite or certain cable packages.

Well if Salem doesn't have cable it might as well be in Canada !!! ...
Ya know oif they don't offer cable a great way to go is satellite dish ... I have Dish Network and it is awesome ... Now we do hvae cable here, but the channels are limited and the cost is too high ... With the dish I can choose what kind of package I want and control my price ... I get twice the channels (and more improtantly the ones I want) for a third the cost ... And personally I rarely watch network television (and usually when I do it is sports) .. We have kids channles for the kids ... Movies for my wife and I ... And of course sports ... And several business channels (so I can keep up on stuff for work) ...
Of course having said all that - track coverage is poor most of the time ... Now I will say that the Paris coverage had some very nice camera angles that I haven't seen before ... And Larry Rawson was his usual self .. But missing the mens 800 was inexcusable ... and track needs someone else to go with Mr Rawson ... Dwight is past (way past) his "day" ... And the guy on the sxidelines (name escapes me at the moment just doesn't get it for me) ...
Course I could gripe on this topic all day ... |

Hold on a minute... Salem is a pretty darn backward place, but it does have cable. I just choose not to subscribe to it (I do have cable internet through the same provider, though). Before moving to Salem, I had no problem justifying the cost when shared with several roommates, but it just doesn't seem worth it for just myself.
I figure I've saved over $1500 by not getting cable since moving here 4 years ago, and I've hardly missed it. That's about half what I've put into my home theater setup, and I get infinitely more enjoyment out of that than I ever did from a few extra channels...
Is Lewis Johnson the name you were looking for?

I would agree, there has to be somebody out there better than Dwight Stones, and I can't say that Lewis Johnson does much for me either. But I don't want to suggest they change them, because as bad as they are, at least they're not Carol Lewis!
I did like when Marion Jones was doing the track side interviews a while back, although she's usually a little busy to be doing that most meets but maybe in a few years, who knows. I also thought that Micheal Johnson did a pretty good job whenever he had the mic as well. However they still haven't found anyone that can represent the distance runners worth beans. The only person that even came close to getting on my nerves as much as Carol Lewis was Marty Liquori. And when Bob Kennedy was in the booth a few weeks ago, wow, he was horrible. He didn't have a clue about what to say. But hey, that simply put me to sleep, where as Marty and Carol are so annoying they usually have me jamming pencils into my ears before the second commercial break. So although the broad cast coverage still leaves much to be desired it could be worse. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I'm guessing Mark "the doc" Davis would be a good representative of the distances and colorful in the booth, maybe too colorful... He's retired and coaching these days (just chatted with him via email last week), so I imagine he'd be available.
Michael Johnson as a commentator surprised me more than just about anything I've ever seen. He seems so bland and unpersonable normally, yet really adds a lot to the broadcast. More than anything, he's opinionated (something I can truly respect ) enough to state what he really thinks about stuff...

Mark Davis was another person who got hammered at the letsrun site. I couldn't believe how vitriolic the discussions got!! (Still going for those vocabulary bonus points, DG )

Marc Davis... I like that. He does seem to have the personality and experience that would make him good at covering track on TV.
To bad I don't have the power to put him in the booth.
If he's not available, I hear Dennis Miller is
I can hear him now ... That Stacy Dragilla is better with a pole than a coked up porn star in a P. Diddy video... _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

vitriolic
ADJECTIVE: 1. Of, similar to, or derived from a vitriol.
2. Bitterly scathing; caustic: vitriolic criticism
I actually had to bust out the dictionary for that one.
I've never been on Letsrun, as opinionated and stupid as most of the posters sound I might have to check it out. I doubt I'd be able to enlighten any of them. But I always enjoy watching people debate logic.
How active are they're training threads? (A personal favorite subject to debate) _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

OK, you probably have to go to that site just to check it out. I guess Davis has a website called lap2go. At letsrun right now there's a big discussion on Galloway/Henderson. Broe is getting raked over the coals and so is his coach. Hottest babes in NCAA and XC is still going strong. And then at the bottom is one "Buxom 19 year old seeks thin, fit, older man". This forum is like Saturday Night Live at the 10K!!
As far as training, maybe 3 articles are worth reading, but John Kellogg's thread comes up page not found, and the other articles are general in nature. The best forum is at the very bottom titled 5/10K training. And there are only 5 responses.
I guess I have just not seen anything that compares to Run-Down as far as specificity and general character. Plus many of the discussions are more intellectual in nature though there is plenty of humor.
I would like to see Dan and DG check it out and then report back.
