Micah, nice job with the updates! Maybe I'll do the same for a sprint race sometime...

Micah, one minute after you posted last night's update, Jurek crossed the finish line. I made a post to that effect but deleted it since I figured that would have been rude of me to make that update after all the work you had already done and the 3 hrs time difference between us. Thanks for answering my emails, that was fun!! You noticed, of course, how much time Davies made up on Trason just in the last 7 mile segment. You were right, if people are within 20 min of each other, its the equivalent of a dead heat!! Hard to think of it in that terms. Those interested should go to the website and check out the course. The altitude and grade changes are awesome. They don't stagger the start of this race either, it appears. 400+ people all start out at the same time. But I guess there is no hurry to jockey for position like in a cross country race. You tell yourself, I got 18 hrs to sort it all out.
All in all, an experience for me that leads me to have much greater appreciation for Ultra Running than I previously did even due to the fact I knew so little about it.

Paul, you should have went ahead with the post. I don't mind having a "relief pitcher" take over when I run out of steam.
Top Ten:
1. Scott Jurek 16:19
2. Steve Peterson 17:28
3. Mark Richtman 17:59 and 47 years old!
4. Tim Twietmeyer 18:08 a good showing for a sentimental favorite.
5. James Kerby 18:11
6. Ann Trason 18:16 at 41 yoa still on top.
7. Pierre Tardiff 18:20
8. Ian Torrence 18:27
9. Emma Davies 18:32 she will beat Trason eventually.
10. Kevin Sawchuck 18:48
3rd through 10th was seperated by only 49 minutes after 100 miles. That is a difference of only 29 seconds per mile, a relatively close race! Emma is 6 or 7 years younger than Ann so I think Emma will eventually pass Trason. But then again I thought it would have happened already.
Concerning the course profile. You will notice that there is more overall decent than ascent. I have read in several articles that the downhills are the worst because they are so long and they just trash the quads.
Lots of fun with this one and Paul, e-mail anytime. |

I noticed Hanna dropped at the last checkpoint because of dehydration. That had to be tough. Trason looked to be tied with Richtman at the 2nd to last checkpoint, then was passed by Twietmeyer and Kerby. In fact, it appears her last 6.7 miles were covered in 94 min. That's 14 min a mile, She must have been trashed. Davies covered it in 84 min. It will be interesting to see if she might have turned a knee or ankle.
A gutsy performance. I encourage everyone to surf through ws100. It's a very well put together site, easy to navigate.

Ordered my Western States stuff today. Talked to Greg Soderlund. We also talked about the training excursions up there. One of the training vacations covers 70 miles of the course!! And you don't have to be a registered WS100 runner to go. They have experts come in and give lectures on top of all this. He said the packages were well worth the money.
Needless to say, I was pumped, even if I can't run a block!!

Watched A Race for the Soul today. It was well done. Micah, if you ever get a chance to run that, I would be happy to make every effort to be on your race crew. However, don't expect me to be your pace runner the last 16 miles!!

Paul, I'll take you up on that offer. I just turned 46 yoa and one of my goals is to run Western States before I'm 50. So, I have some work to do but a resonable time to do it in.
One of the things I noticed in Race For The Soul was how positive and upbeat everyone was. I guess that is a personality trait that you would have to have in order to just attempt a 100 mile footrace. Well, it's time to go make a living.

Micah, here's a good Western States quote for you.
Quote: | "There's no running like trail running," said Scott Jurek, winner of the
last four Western States 100 Mile Endurance Race. "I like what the
Tarahumara Indians say about it," he said, referring to the famed
long-distance Copper Canyon runners of northwestern Mexico: "When you
run with the earth, you can run forever." |

I like that.
Another quote from an ultrarunning website, "If I can see it, I can run to it."
Western States 2003 should be interesting. Can Jurek make it 5 in a row and is this the year someone beats Trason?
Something interesting that I haven't found an answer too. Trason's picture is on the website for the Rocky Racoon 100 last month but her name is not in the results. I interpret that to mean that she did not finish. But I can't find any details. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Well I found the details right after the last post. Trason dropped at the 52 mile point due to ankle and knee problems. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
