I've seen nothing from our distance freinds regarding their expectations for the weekend !!! Anyone anticipating any breakout performances ??? I would love to see a 1:44 in the 800 ... Might give some indication of readiness for Europe - although those races tend to go more like 1:43 or better ...

Who is going ot be this years top miler / 1500 runner ??? No one has really impressed me so far ... Too bad Webb is not going to run here - or any more this season !!! Would have been good preparation for NEXT year ...

Now the women's 1500 should be something else with Jacobs and Hamilton aas usual ... And this year we add Teter !!! maybe with the right conditions we could see a sub 4:00 !!! I know that is wishing for a lot but there will be a lot of speed on that final lap !!!

Any thoghts folks ??

Krummenacker looks to be the only serious guy in the mid-distances right now. Goucher just announced he won't run nats, not that I have a clue what distance he would've run... What's Suzy been up to? I don't believe I've heard a peep from her all year.

Suzy, Regina, Marla and Nicole are all entered in the 1500. Plus Sarah Schwald. Could be the distance race of the meet. Watch Drossin in the 10K. I just wish there was someone else in the race capable of really pushing her.

The men need someone to emerge from this meet as our standard bearer now that Kennedy has passed his prime and Goucher is injured. My guess is Meb or Tim Broe. Maybe Krummanacher but what distance will he run? We still have to wait on Ritz and Webb.

Surprise to watch for? This is a sentimental choice but Mollie Defrancisco in the steeplechase or Dan Browne in the 10K.

Why's Dan Browne a sentimental favorite of yours? We ran in the same league in high school, but I don't believe I ever raced against him...

I'm just hoping SOMEONE in the distances comes out looking like they can compete in Europe ... I hope Kennedy is not past his prime .. I know he has had some injury problems but I would think that a distance runner could have a longer life span thana sprinter ... And sprinters have proven to last into their mid 30's ...

I am looking forward to the women's 1500 ... I see it coming down to Teter and Jacobs but you never know ... I'm not sure what Suzy's been up to but she is entered and she never starts out to intentionally embarass herseslf ...

I also would look for a fast hurdle time in the 110's ... I think Johnson (Allen) reallly wants to make a mark this year ...

Unfortunately, I think Kennedy pushed himself incredibly hard to get to the sub-13 level (5k) and had peaked right around the time he burst onto the international scene. The perception of that is a bit skewed because of how long he dominated domestically and was only made evident when Goucher began challenging him, but Bob seems to have been on the downward slope right about the same time we were wondering how high he could climb...

I was thinking more of Mollie when I said sentimental choice but I also like Browne because he is part of the Army's World Class Athletes Program and I am a former military guy. I've never met him but I can't help but pull for the guys in uniform.

Speaking of military athletes, wasn't Dawn Burrell a pretty good long jumper who was also in the Army? Seems like I remember her about 2-3 years ago but haven't heard anything from her lately.

Sheila Burrell, perhaps? She was a good jumper, but I have no idea if she was in the army.

I would hope not as that would NOT bode well for the chances of our distance runners to reach the elite heights ... I was looking through the middle distance entries last night and there are just no competitors with any quality times at all ... I hope that the met is the defining part of the season for many or we're doomed doomed doomed !!!!!

The women look like there are several ready to run some good times either this weekend or later on in Europe. As for the men, if Goucher is out then that reduces what was already a thin field talent wise in the distance events. I'm curious to see what Kennedy is capable of, although with him it's probably me just looking for a US distance runner to pin my hopes on rather than actually thinking he can get up to the same competitve level he was when he broke 13 minutes.

Sheila Burrell may be who I was thinking about.

Refresh my memory guys. Didn't Regina say that one of the reasons she did not run the world XC meet was that she was preparing for the steeplechase this year? I don't see her name on the entry list for the SC.

I seem to have missed DG's post... I saw some results from a week or two ago where Kennedy was 4th or something in a 10k (in Minnesota possibly) of 30+ minutes. Not a good sign...

Micah, your memory is correct. I haven't heard anything about that since. Not that that surprises me, because it sounded like a bogus excuse at the time.

This maybe should go in the distance den but since we are talking competition I wanted to mention another event this weekend that bears watching.

The World 100K Championships will be run tomorrow night at 8:00 PM in Belgium. We have both mens and womens teams competing and both are contenders for medals.

I will of course keep you posted. Wink

I thought Kennedy was suffering from plantar fasciitis??

Micah, I didn't see Regina's name in the Steeple, either.
