A lot of people do that just to make sure you're as refreshed as possible when it counts. I prefer light activity the day before a meet to help keep you loose and in the running mentality.

Nothing you do (running-wise) the day before a meet will help you with your conditioning. All it can do is tire you out. Stretching is good, running aint. Mad Dog Mike www.training2run.com

I can't stand not to do something the day before the meet. I like to run easily for a while and then do some pick ups and stretch a lot. During cross country I also used to like to pick a mile on the coarse that was fairly representitive of the whole coarse and then run it pretty fast. Not real fast but just faster than race pace. This was for 8k and 10k so for 5k you could do a half mile. It never really took anything out of me and it let me know what kind of time to expect the next day.

If you're a sprinter I will defer to Dan and Conway, although I still can't see the harm in doing a little jogging and some pick ups.

My preference is to rest 2 days before the meet, then get light activity that simulates race intensity in short bursts (much like DG described for XC) the day before. That leaves you both rested and sharp, which is a difficult combination to arrive at without actually tapering.

I always liked to go through a warm up routine the day before ... Including stretching ... Maybe a few light starts and some light strides ... Keep the body in the proper frame to be ready to compete ...

I like the idea of warming up and stretching to the point of breaking a sweat, then call it a day.

My most influential coach always said with regards to easy workouts (to paraphrase), "if it's enough to warrant getting changed, it counts as a workout." Point being, don't do any more than is optimal to get yourself ready for when it counts.
