Yeah I know, it is only October but I will need to start now for this one. We are doing a lot of talking about who is best in this event or that event, but what are WE doing? Anybody up to a challenge? I propose we get out of the house and do some racing of our own in 2002! My stress fracture should be healed enough by January to start the serious training.
Now Conway I know you are a sprinter and I believe you are a middle distance man Dan but there is a way we can have a little competition of our own. We could race and use the WAVA age group tables to rate our performances. You guys have to believe me when I say I am going out on a limb here...I got to lose 30 pounds to run any competitive times.
So.....any takers?

That could be a fun and motivating game, but for one somewhat strange reason, I'm going to have to pass on it for the time being. The official reason is that I'm retired. The lesser known explanation that goes along with it is that I've found my chances of getting my body healthy and enjoying running are much higher if I put aside any goals of competing and avoid pushing my body until it's ready to do so. That's been my approach since November (following a period of about 3 years where I couldn't catch a break), and it finally seemed to start paying off over the summer. I've transitioned into some near-training quality workouts (emphasis on near) and have regained a bit of fitness, but I still have a lot of physical issues to work through before I can set a goal of racing and be confident my body will not instantly break down.

I don't know your personal situation Dan so I will accept your answer with one caveat...running is a sport you don't have to retire from.
Now I see 6 views to this post and only one answer from Dan. All you guys reading but not answering are welcome to play too. The more people that get involved the more fun we can have.
I may be fearless but I am nothing to fear. Like I said, I got 30 pounds to lose and my current training consists of 14 minutes of slow but PAINFREE running.
Any takers? |

Keep in mind that of those 6 views, one was me viewing it and the other was me being taken back to the page after posting (ditto for your original post), so at most 3 other people read it... By the way, site traffic has been down somewhat of late, which might be partly responsible for low forum participation. I need to do something about that...

Yes and no. When your quads are so messed up that it becomes difficult to bend your knees, and that doesn't even rate as your most painful ailment at the time, then you start to look at things a bit differently. What I realized is that by holding onto the goal of getting back into racing shape, I was just banging my head against the wall and causing unneeded and unproductive frustration. I certainly couldn't enjoy running as a result. Once I decided to just run when I felt like it (and when my body felt like it, more importantly), I started to feel a bit better physically and actually somewhat enjoyed those days I did run. Of course, I lost a bit of fitness... I've basically spent the past 4 months steadily adding layers to my exercising (mostly weights, jump roping, and basketball), finally culminating with some regular running over the past month and peaking with 4 track workouts in an 8 day stretch last week. Still a long ways to go, but it's a start. Until I regain confidence in my body, I won't have the motivation to go out and train regularly, and without that, I don't have the confidence and desire to compete. It all starts with health...

Hmmm .. I might be willing to sign up !!! I have 20 pounds to lose .. And not sure if I could come back and start running the 100 .. Might have to move up and go 200/400 .. Or maybe just 400 .. Yuck .. But would probably be the easiest to prepare for .. Have thought many times of coming out of retirement ... Have been having tons of fun going to meets and watching .. KEeping my notes etc .. But have to admit that I get that feeling in my heart whenever they call runners take your marks !! So how would this work and how do we get Dan involved ??? |

Patience...
Considering the distance you and I are likely to race, there isn't much to do until April or so, so things will sort themselves out in time.

Dan, hang in there and keep the rehab going. This is actually my third stress fracture so I know what you are going through.
Conway, you live in CA right? Should be lots of opportunities for meets this spring. I'll be hitting the 5K and 10K races about March so we have plenty of time for our respective weight losses and training. And maybe even enough time for Dan to join in.

Actually there are lots of all comers meets at UC Berkeley which is about an hour from where I live .. And they start in January .. Also some further down the peninsula in Los Gatos about another 45 minutes or so .. So yes there are opportunities .. Will just have ot get regular with soem workouts and see what I can do .. Actually came out of retirement once when I was 33 and got down to 10.8 .. Wasn't too shabby .. But had been doing a lot of bike riding and playing softball and volleyball .. So had been real active prior to getting back on the track .. Will be totally different this time .. And I will be 10 years older .. So we will see .. |

Ok, just to prove that I'm not always a party pooper, let me contribute to this lively thread.
I did 4x200 today, running them in 33.7, 32.6, 31.7, and 30.7. I wish I could say I was purposefully running such even cut downs, but I was pretty much red lining it the whole way... I also wish I could say that high of an effort would result in something under 29, but it was only a few months ago I was maxed out at 34, so that's not too bad. Followed that up with some leg and back weight work, so I'm nice and tired now.
If I can keep this up for a few months while keeping the quad tension from getting any worse than it is now (lots of daily maintenance is going into those tree trunks), then I might just be ready to join the fun.

I almost forgot...Justin, why don't you join in too. Sounds like you are already in racing shape so you will be the guy we will be going after. |

I hope you guys haven't forgotten, because I haven't! This south Georgia traditional holiday cooking is making the weight loss tough but the calf is getting better. I'm runnning the flat ground and walking the hills and every day feels better.

The last time I stepped on a track was in 1990. I gave up running at university and haven't been near a pair of spikes since. Nor, in all honesty, do I really have any interest in running myself. It's really, really cold here in London at the moment and the idea of the type of workout I did around this time of year at age 20 fills me with something akin to horror.
I am happy to resolve to continue to improve my basic health though - I've just had a breakfast of bagels, muesli, oj and bio yoghurt with grapes, so I'm feeling quite pleased with myself. That will not, however, translate into an urge to don shorts, t-shirt and trainers and pound the dirty streets of London town!
I wish you all the very best in your athletic endeavours....I'll be the one in the coat and gloves, walking past the track on the way to somewhere warm!

OK Justin, everyone needs to have a cheering section so you can be ours. Then around spring when the weather warms and you see just how slow I really am maybe the bug will bite and you will be back in training. I believe in merry old England they say "Happy Christmas" so Happy Christmas and good luck with that new healthy diet.
Micah...eating way too much and running way too slow |

Not to worry, I've been continuing to run fairly regularly, all the while contemplating what the heck a bio yogurt is and thinking Justin's breakfast sounds like three breakfasts for most people...
