There is a fire about 70 miles away in the Okeefenokee swamp. The prevailing winds blew a dense cover of smoke into our area and when I went out this morning the air was filled with wood smoke. Visibility was only about half a mile and the odor of the smoke was everywhere. I have run in fog before but this was something completely strange. I probably should have gone back in and used the dreadmill. Anybody else run in strange occurances?

A friend and I went on a run a few summers ago that I'll never forget. It's an 8 mile out and back run, the first half is all up hill and it's a descent grade. Anyway it was raining and the wind was blowing hard, really hard. It was blowing so hard that going out we had a tail wind and only my back got wet but not my front. We turned around and it was strait back into the wind. The wind was so strong that eventhough it was a 600 to 700 foot decline from the turn around point to the finish it took us 2 or 3 minutes longer to get back than to go out! The really neat thing was that when we got back the wind had blown the back of my shirt and shorts dry.

I'm reminded of the infamous dust storms we got from time to time in Walla Walla (my first two years of college). One of them hit on a 80-90 degree day the morning of my first collegiate cross country race. Let's just say those conditions set the table for a nice big PR the next week...
