I have always felt that I run at stronger paces when I do road races (or trails) but I rarely do the same distances as I do on the track so it's hard to compare them. I just recently ran a 3.06 km (yes, I know that's a little too precise) road race in 10:29, but my fastest 3000m time on the track is 11:08 which I did only a couple days earlier.
I think it has to do with not knowing exactly how much of the race is left, so I don't try to conserve energy for later, I just go for it.
Is this common, or am I just weird?

A lot of runnners run better on uneven surfaces (trails, xc) where it's more a matter of strength than speed. Different rhythm, less monotony. Sometimes it feels like you're going faster due to the changing scenery and surges that result from terrain changes, but the overall pace is usually slower than on a track.
