Something different ... Using prominent competitions (Olympics, Euros, Worlds, Trials, major European meets, etc)give the first three places and times of a race .. And see if anyone can recognize the race .. Hints can be given from 3rd place up - ie first give the 3rd place person, then second and then winner ... Here are two to start
1. 12:58.13
2. 12:58.72
3. 12:58.80
AND
1. 10.14
2. 10.22
3. 10.33
Dan ?? Micah ?? Justin ?? Anyone ?? |

I was hoping to figure this one out without consulting lists, but I fear that epiphany is not presenting itself to me...

Ah, the 5k is the '99 World Champs in Seville, with Sallah Hissou in first. That was my second guess... Actually, sort of a tie for my first.
Still not sure about the 100m, though... One more hint?

Gotcha. That would be the Munich Olympics ('72), although I must confess the Borzov "clue" was merely enough to tell me where to look, not what the answer was... I thought Miller was more of a 200 guy, and Taylor doesn't ring a bell.
By the way, Conway had the 2000th post of the Running Discussions forum! No door prizes, just a slap on the back... I believe it was in the 900's when you came along!

Congrats !!! You got em ... Course you cheated a little but that is ok ... Miller is Inger's Dad ... And actually he medalled in two consecutive Olympics he was 2nd in 68 @ 10.04 behind Hines WR .. And then the third in the 72 games .. Robert Taylor was a solid if not spectacular sprinter in the early 70s ... Sort of like John Capel in the 100 - alwalys there but not a big winner ... HE benefited from the disqualification of his team mates Hart and Robinson when they didn't make it to their quarterfinal races .. He was the only one that made it in time and ended up getting the silver medal .. After the race it was assumed that Borzov would NOT have won the gold had the others been in the race since our "weakest link" was able to garner the silver .. Of course Borzov went on to win the 200 as well in 20.00 !!!
Let's see ... Two more races ...
1. 1:43.38
2. 1:44.00
3. 1:44.25
AND
1. 19.75
2. 19.79
2. 20.04
There ya go ... |

The 200 sounds like the '88 Olympics, and I'm thinking '96 Olympics for the 800, but I'll have to check on that... Off to help setup for our conference (xc) meet tomorrow...
Sorry about the lack of door prize; budget cut backs getcha every time. Hey, you got a fantasy track & field league!! Not a bad consolation gift.

Have to take what I can get I suppose ... :smile:But the fantasy league is not bad at all .. As for the races, the 200 IS the 88 Olympics final .. Delaoch/Lewis/da Silva .. But the 800 is not the 96 Olympic final .. |

I took the long route to determining the 800m race in question. Would have been a lot quicker just to look through WC's from around the time I originally guessed... Since looking it up is nothing to be impressed by, I'll at least offer up the "research" I did to come up with my answer...
Looking through the list of all-time sub-1:44's, I found the following matches for 1:43.38 (sorted):
1.43.38 Sebastian Coe GBR 1 Bern 29-08-1989
1.43.38 Wilson Kipketer DEN 1 Athene 8-08-1997
1.43.38 Nixon Kiprotich KEN 2/A Zürich 16-08-1989
1.43.38 David Kiptoo KEN 2 Monaco 10-08-1996
1.43.38 Rich Kenah USA 3/A Zürich 13-08-1997
1.43.38 Arthémon Hatungimana BDI 3 Bruxelles 24-08-2001
Only the first 2 could be right, as the others were all in 2nd or 3rd place efforts. Next, looking at a deeper list to find a match for 1:44.00...
1.44,0y Rick Wohlhuter USA 48-12-23 1 Los Angeles 1973-05-27
1.44,0 Sebastian Coe GBR 56-09-29 1 London 1985-05-18
1.44,0A Robert Kibet KEN 65-12-15 1h Nairobi 1989-10-13
1.44,00 George Kersh USA 68-07-03 4 New Orleans 1992-06-24
1.44,00 Johnny Gray USA 60-06-19 1 Atlanta 1996-06-19
1.44,00 Johnny Gray USA 60-06-19 2s2 Atlanta 1996-07-29
1.44,00 Norberto Téllez CUB 72-01-22 2 Athęna 1997-08-08
1.44,00 Hezekiél Sepeng RSA 74-06-30 4rA Bruxelles 2000-08-25
1.44,00 Joseph Mwengi Mutua KEN 78-12-10 1 Rieti 2001-09-02
That tells me it had to be Athens, which looks distinctly WC'ish... Sure enough!

Well now that would be one way to approach it all right !!!! ... And it did result in the correct answer ... I chose that particular race as it was the last championship race in which an American won a medal .. If you had looked up the final time you would have found Rich Kenah in the bronze medal position ... Since then we have been blanked as they say !!!! And of course via several discussions now no one sees any hope on the horizon ...
So here are two more ...
1. 44.26
2. 44.40
3. 44.95
AND
1. 48.16
2. 48.85
3. 50.55
Let's see you look THOSE up for answers .... |

I actually knew Kenah when I figured out which race it was.
Let's see, men's 400 would be the '76 Olympics in Montreal:
1) Alberto Juantorena
2) Fred Newhouse
3) Herman Frazier
The women's 400 looks to be Athens in '82:
1) Marita Koch
2) Jarmila Kratochvilová
3) lists only go to 50.49...
Now I just have to figure out what took place in September of '82 in Athens... No Olympics that year, WC's didn't start till the next year, too late in the year for the Athens Grand Prix, a few years before the Goodwill Games started, I believe, and the athletes involved couldn't have been part of the Commonwealth games... What's that leave???
