I find it interesting that for how consistently fast Powell has run this year, and with him not really being considered a closer, the only segments he's on the list for are the last two.

Powell's finishing abilities are definitely overshadowed by his ability to accelerate so well [especially for a big guy - 6' 2'' I think] away from the rest of the field

Powell's has the ability to hold top speed and a speed close to it just as Flo-Jo, Carl Lewis & Mo Greene were able to do in their prime years. In his Athens WR 2005 [the first of his 9.77s] he had splits from 40-100m of 0.85, 0.85, 0.84, 0.84, 0.85, 0.85 - a drop-off of just 0.01 in some 6 10m segments is just awesome. His splits in Gateshead WR this year [his second 9.77] from 40-100m he split 0.85, 0.84, 0.84, 0.85, 0.85, 0.86 which is just a 0.02 drop-off [he probably would've split 0.85 for 90-100m again in that Gateshead had he not have eased-back slightly in the final 5m of the race]

I think Powell must've been listening to John Smith when he said that it's not in his interest for his athletes to hit a fastest split of 0.83 at halfway and then to drop-off the charts by like 0.04-0.05, but that it is better to string together 5 consecutive 0.85s and see what time that brings [Greene & Boldon have hit 0.82 & 0.83 anyway, but those were in extreme cases and their final 40-50m often represented Smith's idela of holding speed well ala Flo-Jo in '88]

I've yet to Analyse Powell's latest 9.77. I am working on getting some clearer footage so I can give some good numbers. It really will be interesting to see Powell's quickest split-time, and also to see what kinda splits Gay put down for his final 20m. He was closing like a beast!

What is the fastest 40--meter (not 40--yard) split by an athlete starting legally from the blocks?

4.64 [from my Analysis] by Maurice Greene in his 9.82 ED 2001 WC race

4.66 [Official Analysis from Charles Univeristy & IAAF] by Ben Johnson in his 9.79 Seoul 1988 OG, but we all know how that ended-up

Fastest 40m [Official Analysis] is 4.68 by Dennis Mitchell [0.090 flying-start] + Leroy Burrell [Tokyo 1991 WC], Maurice Greene [Athens 1997 WC] & Bruny Surin [Sevilla 1999 WC]
