On another website I spoke how highly I thought of Tirunesh back when she was only 15/16 (almost 4 yrs ago) but even her 2005 took me by surprsie. Over 2 yr ago I said she should run the 10000m and would be hard to beat but finishing in 58 at sub 30:30 in unreal. In a major Championship no female have ever finished a 10000m at that speed-the previous best was by her cousin Derartu Tulu (60.5 or 61.0).

My thought on her was that she could develop into a stronger/endurance 5000/10000m runner when I saw her in 2002. I felt that she would have to get away from the Berhane Adere's and Meseret Defar type kickers; however, she totally shocked me with speed never seen in a 5000m/10000m female!!!!!!

HOW MANY MALES outside of a few Africans can finish a sub 27:30 10000m that fast or a 12:55 5000m? Now can you think of any male who could do it in both of those races 8 days apart? I can think of only one and he never won double GOLD.

Me and a friend recently talked in depth about her double and its truly a mindboggling achievement once you think about it in depth.

That's an interesting point, comparing her closing speed to many of the top men. That would be rather humbling... Of course, put Culpepper in a 30:00 race and he'd probably close in 54 seconds or under, so it's somewhat of a moot point. Still, she's shown the kind of speed/endurance combination that made Geb unbeatable and regarded by many as the best ever.

You should be a scout or agent/manager. Smile

Just read you reply Dan of course most elite man can run her times and finish faster; however, how many can run Tirunesh times equivalent in men 5000m and 10000m and finish both races that fast in World Championship format?
