They got rid of the exception(s) altogether? Was that part of the move to cut down the size of fields?

Maybe I'm wrong ... But as far as I know they haven't had exceptions for a while ... Now I'm second guessing ... I'll have to check it out ... When was the last exception you are aware of ??? _________________ Conway

I think they still had them in 2000, but I can't remember if it was for the Trials, the Olympics, or both.

If my memory serves me correctly, there are only exceptions for the WC's. None for the OT's or OG's except for coaches' discretion for the relays. Conway would be right as far as being smart to exercise his options, but does Greene even have a 200m qualifier this season?? If so, obviously I missed it. _________________ Paul

That could be where I was confused.
What's the qualifying window? I think they generally overlap seasons to some degree, so he may have a qualifier from last year.

There is a time period for qualifiers that goes back to last season ... I think it might be 12 months or something like that ... So yes Greene has a qualifier ...
I just think it won't hurt him to have an option - even if he decides not to use it ...
And as Paul said, only the World Champs will allow you in without a qualifying mark ... And that is only if you are the defending champion in an event ... And that has only been since '97 (done to get Michael Johnson into the meet as he was unable to compete at Nationals due to his 150 meter match race injury) ...
I printed out the Trials list last night ... Interesting the number of people who have yet to declare that they will be competing !!!! _________________ Conway

Anxious more the word ... Its interesting ... I think we are deeper in the sprints than ever ... Yet at the same time I feel like there are only a handful of guys that are really ready ... The sprint teams should be:
100 - Greene, Crawford, Capel
200 - Capel, Crawford, Patton
400 - Wariner, Washington, Willie
But you KNOW that something is going to happen ... Lots of somethings ... And that is what makes the Trials so interesting and exciting ... Everyone is already in town ... And the buzz has started ... Lots of track in the paper and on the news ... Time for the show to begin ... _________________ Conway

I agree that the qualifying for these events is rather limiting, but I think I would approach it in a slightly different manner ...
I would give automatic entries to the top 10 performers from the previous season ... And I would define top performers as those with the best 3 meet averages ... I would think that most athletes would compete in at least 3 meets ... 5 or 10 might be a stretch for some events, but I think everyone can make 3 ... So I would give those individuals automatic entries ...
Then you could simply follow the system the way it is - with the current A & B qualifiers ...
I think it would make both the Olympics and Worlds super high quality and unquestinably the best meets ever ... You would ensure the potential that every final would truly have the BEST athletes in the world going head to head ... Instead of a partial list of top athletes ... _________________ Conway

Looking at these results confirms my earlier feelings about the sprints in Athens ... One, that Collins will not be in the mix for a medal and may not make the final ... And Two, that Asafa Powell is going to be a threat in both sprints ... _________________ Conway

Collins had a big margin of victory, though. The modest time can't really be held against him in that case.
