I'm an 800 runner, currently a little under 2:00. What are your thoughts about a training program that only has one speed workout a week, once in a while two. Two days of heavy lifting (mainly upper body but some lower body). 30 minute runs at 70% on lifting days (before lifting). Other days are endurance type runs (40 minutes easy) or a 5k at about a 6 minute pace. It's always been my belief that any 800 program should be based on speed (200-400 meter interval workouts, plyometrics, etc.), especially in my case, since I feel I'm more of a 400-800 runner than a 800-1600 runner (sub 51 for 400). I just came off of a season of cross-country training (pr'd at about 28 min for 5 miles).
Bottom line, am I going to suffer from a lack of speed training, or will I benefit more from all of this endurance work? |

I can't really say I see the reasoning behind that proposed program. Looks like a lot of disparate pieces thrown together with no clear, overriding them. To be honest, I don't see much speed or endurance in there, just a watered down version of both. If you feel endurance work is your bigger need right now, cut back the speed and weights and focus on that.
