Been running almost daily for 12 years, never any problems till I played softball last summer... then screwed up the right knee with what I thought was a torn meniscus at the time.

I had arthroscopic surgery in September to remove some extra tissue in the knee (plica??) that was causing pain while running. Meniscus and other areas of the knee were really clean, according to the doc.

I came back up to speed very quickly--bicycling and doing other workouts at Physical Therapy at full effort a week after surgery. Doc let me start running in late October, and I immediately found I was running better than before (4 miles, without stopping, at a fairly good pace)--pain free. Was still the fastest runner in my squadron despite the 6-week layoff.

Now, I am having some trouble with what I believe is mostly patellar tendinitis. I've never had this much pain with the tendon, and was wondering if this is normal after arthroscopic surgery or if it is possible I've tried getting back into the game too quickly after surgery and have reinjured the "wounds" caused by surgery.

Also, was wondering if little aches and pains along the sides/top of the knee are normal this long after surgery (again, think I've messed up some of the wounds caused by surgery where they ran the scope).

The doc did have me on methylprednisolone for the tendinitis, then started Celebrex after I used the methyl-p. The methylprednisolone was FANTASTIC! No pain whatsoever... but unfortunately can't use it forever. Celebrex didn't help at all.

Thanks for your reply... wishing I still could run pain free--this is depressing!!

Mike

I don't have any experience with coming back from surgery, but it's quite normal to experience various aches and pains when resuming any sort of training. If you think it is more than just an annoyance (i.e. an actual injury developing), I would go back and consult with the P.T. who's familiar with your knee. Best not to guess on things of that sort...
