The school librarians wonder why literacy is down, particularily among boys. I can tell you why: the books many librarians get are not interesting to young men such as myself. I remember back in middle school I would search for hours looking for just one book that might interest me. I found that many young adult books have 12sh year old girls as main characters. After reading plenty of books like this in Literature class, I was put off. I wanted stories about men. Men struggling and overcoming the challenges that face them. Not the emotional highs and lows of a little girl! I mean when I was in junior high I hated girls! Why would I want to read about them? |
I would not place any scriptures amongst my favorite books. I do read all three main Prohpets, but I would not list any as a book.

Now there is a book that is not written for 12 year old girls!!!!
I just finished Running With The Buffoloes. It was very good and I highly recommend it.

Two health and lifestyle books to add: Eat Right-Electrolyte and Younger Next Year.
The first one is a book on minerals, especially salt. It may cure me of my junk food habit. Some scathing words for Atkins, also.
The second one is on slowing down the aging process and is one of the better books I've seen in that category. They have a website you can visit: youngernextyear.com .

The more I read Younger Next Year, the better I like it. I am reading a library copy right now, and will probably purchase one myself. It is really geared for guys like you and I, Micah, though we are doing a lot of what they are recommending right now.

Worst Sci Fi book that I read till the end:
The Labyrinth of Dreams--Why worst? Bcause of the lock of immagination. The Book was written a quater--of--a--century ago, and states the old truth (for the first half of it) that everyone who works for the governmnet in NJ, any level of the governmnet, either looks the other way or works for some kind of mob. On the other hand is not the government just another form of mob? This is reality. I wantted sci fi!

I'd have to start with any of Kurt Vonnegut's better works (Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle, to be sure), The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, the Narnia series, maybe Heart of Darkness. Not much else coming to mind just now.

I have to read Slaughterhouse 5 for AP English this summer. It looks like you're into some fantasy too, have you ever tried the Inheritance Cycle- Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr? They may seem more kid-like compared to the Lord of the Rings, but you may enjoy them. Some good suggestions are: The Kite Runner, Stephen King's The Stand+The Mist, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.

Eragon is the only one I've heard of, and the movie was too disappointing to be bothered with the book...

The movie was garbage. I saw it on HBO and it was just a quick and cheesy film. I didn't like the movies for the Chronicles of Narnia either. For 90% of the time, any movie made after a fantasy novel is usually a failure with Lord of the Rings being the only exception I know of. Harry Potter for instance is one of them which also reminds me of a joke I saw on tv, "Harry Potter has gotten old, I think it should be called Harold Potter."

Ok, so I've started reading Slaughterhouse-five this morning and I'm on page 72, Ch. 4. It's an unusual book, quite different from what I've read before. There is no fixed plot, it's just a story told by the author. It gets really random though and it's kind of hard to grasp. For example, what is the purpose for mentioning a planet called Tralfamadore in an anti-war book? It just doesn't make any sense.
