|
5 weeks of no running -- on the heels of about a month and a half of very sporadic running while resting a calf injury, the final 4 weeks of it consisting of nearly non-stop work on the house (resulting in aching knees and back); finally laced up the shoes and went out for a spin in the rain. Felt quite good for about the first quarter mile, then sluggish as heck. Started to come alive once my body remembered which way was up and maintained fairly well through 2-3 miles (I have to get used to new running routes now; I had the distances all figured out before). Got to explore the new neighborhood a bit and discovered it's rather hilly... Paul, you should be happy to hear that. I've got a Park about 100m away that I couldn't see until the leaves were off the trees, but it has a nice little swervy paved loop.
So there you have it, the latest installment in Dan's funkified running diary.

Dan, you need to send me your new address and directions. We need to do lunch again, soon. Fortunately, this time around I have not had too many calf or foot problems, but I am only approaching 20 miles a week. After my Sunday race I did go to the gym that night for a weight workout, a light workout on Mon, and then intervals again on Tues at Lake O HS : 5x800 in 3:42, 3:32, 3:26, 3:30, 3:25 with about a 2:50-3:05 400 jog in between. I may be overdoing it here, but so far no problems.

You've Got Mail.
Last time you came down I was running pretty well but you were just getting started back up. Now the tables have turned... Maybe we can combine a light run with a lunch? I don't think I'll be trying to crank out half a dozen 800's any time soon, though.

I still consider myself in startup mode. Remember, you're probably churning out 7 min miles on your comeback, I'm lucky to hit 8:30, but, yes, I think that would be fun!! And I got your mail. thanks

After not really running since about July, I too have recently begun running again. I'm just working on finding a way to get out and run as often as possible. So far I've run 3 out of the last 4 days and will go for a run right after I manage to sneak out of the office. Right now I;m more worried about being consistant with my runs in order to loose some wieght rather than speed. I'm at 175 right now which is probably the biggest I've ever been. I'm hoping to be under 170 when I go back to visit my family and friends (including Hammer) in Jan. Right now my long term goal is to be in good enough shape to run the 5000 in the first outdoor meet, an open which we host. Last year I went 17 flat and I'd like to be better than that this year, although there are a lot of miles between me and a 17 flat 5k right now. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Wow, as soon as Micah recovers and Conway dusts off the trainers, we can all compare "comeback notes"!

I'm not so much on the comeback trail as I am just doing a little running. Sort of like if Wayne Gretsky (sp) skates a little to stay fit, only to a lesser extent. I won't consider myself on a comeback unless I've already had a long stretch of 40-50 mile weeks (recreational mileage for me) and decide to get serious about getting fast again. When I declare that I'm shooting for a sub30 10k and aim to average 90+ mile week for 3-4 months to try and get there, then I'll be on a comeback. Until then I'm just doing a little running _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Amen to the gradients......
Did nothing for 8 weeks to let the stress fracture feel and now as soon as I get up to 2 minutes of running I start to feel general pain in the foot. I have no idea what is going on. This is getting very disheartening. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Not exactly...just an overall pain in the ball of the foot and the outside edge of the foot. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

You've had as much expierince with stress fractures as anyone. But from what the athletes, trainers and doctors I've talked to about it tell me, that sort of thing is pretty common and so long as the pain is getting less and not worse over time then it's just part of the normal healing process. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

My thoughts exactly. If the soreness is in a different area, it can likely be attributed to getting re-acclimated to running or just the areas surrounding the healed stress fracture adapting to taking on more of a load and being a bit tender as a result. Of course, play it by ear, as you know your body best.

Dan and DG, I think you guys are probably right. I can remember similar type discomfort when rehabbing from previous stress fractures. So I will continue to take it easy and err on the side of caution. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |
