A good friend of mine's brother goes to school with Stember ... He is actually a good guy ... Bright and sharp even ... He genuinely likes the 800 and enjoys running it even though he's had more success in the 1500 ... Unfortunately he get's tagged along with Gabe since it seems they hang out together a lot ... |

I've only seen Stember up close a few times, and he seems like a nice guy, just a bit goofy. Of course, If I were in his position, I'd probably be accused of the same and then some!

Here is a question for the floor.
If Regina Jacobs skiped out on the world cross country championships to train for the steeple, why didn't anybody call her on not running the steeple. If Jim Grey didn't ask I have to wonder, is it because he didn't know (which is my bet) or because ESPN thought nobody would know what he was talking about and didn't want another Pete Rose type insident. Although I can hardly put Jacobs and Rose on the same level, the idea is the same. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Lack of information/knowledge is probably the main reason. If Jim Grey thought there was a story there, he would have had no qualms about dragging the sport through the mud while trying to uncover it...

I don't know there is a part of me that would love to see Jacobs get a little muddy for shafting the US team at the world championships _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

I would imagine on ly a handful of people even knew about the statement ... Unfortunately cross country gets less press than track and field in this country ... |

Still if it had come up, it would have drawn people in. The masses still love national teams and to hear of a top US runner skipping out on our national team to train for an event she isn't running would have drawn more interest than the lame interview she did do. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Interesting posts on Jacobs. I thought I had read somewhere that during a training time trial she landed on all four's after the water jump. What is the height of the barriers? I know they crank them down quite a bit from the mens steeple. Womens steeple is kind of like the womens pole vault for me. I am expecting some serious breakthrough performances at some point here.

The hurdle hight if 3 feet for men 2'6" for women plus or minus 6 millimeters. Everyone that has ever run the steeple for any length of time has eaten it on the water jump it's part of the race. The steeple chase is a hurdle race people fall. Although I still laugh when ever anyone falls, so long as it isn't serious or one of my athletes in a race. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Did anyone else notice that Steve Slattery was listed as unattached in the steeplechase. He just finished his Sr year in track at CU but he still has a year left of cross country. I wonder if this means he won't ne returning to Boulder next year. That could really hurt the Buff's chances of repeating. Of coarse I could be reading to much into this. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Could also quite easily be a clerical error, considering how understaffed USATF's media group is. If he weren't returning, I see no reason why he couldn't still be listed as CU affiliated. After all, he's technically in college for the 2001-2002 school year until the end of the summer as far as the NCAA and statisticians are concerned.
Now, if he's signed with an agent, that would definitely change things. Could be that he's gone pro but doesn't yet have a sponsor to list affiliation with? Just a shot in the dark...

It could indeed be a clerical error. Jeff Kuzma was listed as running for US Air Force and as unattached on different lists. |

I was just on Dyestat and found out some rather interesting rumors about Slattery. I guess the coach Drake that just left CU to take the job at Washington was the coach that worked with Slattery the most, appearently he and Wettmore don't get along all that well. Also from what it sounded like the reason Slattery wasn't listed as running for CU was that he had to pay his own way. Apparently CU didn't pay to send him out there to run like some other colleges did for their runners.
Right now there are all kinds of rumors flying around about him turning pro and having Drake coach him over the internet, while others have him putting off running as a pro so he can run one more cross country season. If anyone hears anything reliable let me know.
On a side note. Do any of the other coaches out there find it reassuring to know that even highly successful coaches and runners go through stuff like this. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Interesting. As always, I would strongly caution against reading too much into internet rumors, but I really don't know anything about the situation one way or the other.
I don't know that I'd call it reassuring, but it's somewhat nice to know we're all human.
