I think one of the biggest reasons for the drop off is mental, (I really hate saying anything is mental here I go) the first two - four days after coming down you step outside and it feels like your lungs are the size of jumbo trash bags, after the first couple of days you get use to it and it quits feeling like that. Which can reduce confidence, which can hurt race performance. Where as in the lab there really is no motivation or drive to beat anyone, you aren't thinking that "this guy next to me hasn't trained in the rare air, I'm stronger than he is." I know from reading the research that you still have elevated red blood cell counts and higher levels of oxydative enzymes in you muscle after 7-14 days at sea level. But the plicibo effect is greatly reduced after that first 2-4 day window. _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |
