This guy was no newcomer, he was trying out for 2008 Beijing.

That's year-old news.

A marathoner did die this weekend, but he was much older.

I didn't want to find date-specific news, just anything that involved a marathoner dying. Some other marathoner died from over hydration or something that has to do with the sodium in his blood. What do you think the leading cause of marathoner deaths is?

It's weird though because he died with 5 1/2 miles in. Let's say that he was also running the 10K splits slower because it's a marathon of course.

Salt levels (the only way to get otherwise poisonous sodium into human body; NaCl is good, but on their own both Na and Cl will kill you! Evil or Very Mad ) must stay in balance with water levels at all times or a person faces death. This is why so many runners chew on salty pretzels.

If he did die from over--hydration, he must have drunk too much water before the race.

The military guilde lines (and they do make sense) instruct to drink at most 12 quarts a day (about 11.5 liters) and between 1 to 1--and--1/2 an hour (at the very most 2 quarts).
This may seem at 1st to be at odds with that human body can assimilate at the very most 0.9 quart or 0.8 liter of fluids an hour irrespective of person's size.
However, in the case of the need to work in extremly hot and humid environment, for let say 6 hours; it does make sense. In this case, the additional 0.7 quart of water an hour works the same way as does the coolant in a car's engine.
Why not more than 2 quarts an hour?
Because that would put too much strain on the body and would not cause the cooling effect.

How could Paula Radcliffe win if the humidity is near or at 100% and the heat is over 85 *F?
It is rather extreme and simple:
keep her body as cold as possible.
Before the race deep her body in a water just under 70*F (let say 68 *F) for let say 1 minute.
Afterward, she should, every mile, pour a quart or a couple of cold water over her entire body or her coach could shower her with a garden hose.
