Just thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and make a thread about my running instead of posting it in random threads all over the place.
I took a step forward with my whooping cough situation today. I was in a 20km relay today (4 x 5km) and we did much better than expected. The three other people on my team were some guys that I train with (their agaes are 16, 17 and 24 and run 34, 33, and 30 minute 10k's respectively). I was the lead off runner and needless to say was a little afraid of being the weak link since my PR is only 36 for 10k at the moment. (should be faster... that's my excuse at least )
I wound up doing my leg in 15:26 and stayed with the lead runners. Our next runner ran just about the exact same time, and the third guy ran 16:05 (slower than expected). At that point we were in second and about 45 seconds behind. Our last runner went through in 14:24 and made up ground but he couldn't quite catch the leader and we lost by around 10 seconds.
The previous course record was 63 minutes and we (and the winners) ran 61, so it was still a successful day.
I have a funny feeling that it wasn't actually 5 kilometers, so I was more satisfied that I had equalled or bettered two guys my age that I've never beaten. And even better, I didn't cough a single time! As most of you know I've been struggling with whooping cough for over 3 months and it seems that it may finally be clearing up.
Good day today... got that damned monkey off my back.
btw, it was the most well organized race I've been in. Before it started they told us there were two rules: Stay to the right when you're getting lapped and don't complain. It sets a good mentality for the race and everyone just has fun. More races should be run this way. |

Congrats, you're now one of the cool dudes! I suppose your chosen thread title has an extra ounce of tormented coolness, though.
Very nice relay running. If that's anywhere near a legit 5k course, that's a sign of a great year to come for you.

That's no-nonsense!

Great run. Even if the course is a little short it looks like you are in great shape considering what you have been through. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Although I didn't post on your Whooping Cough thread, I was following it closely. Based on how well you did last Spring, I know you were looking forward to a big XC season this year.
Looking back on it, it looks like it was good to work through your illness. You're in good shape to train well through the late Fall and Winter. Your race shows how well you're stamina has carried you.

I'd like to do a certified road race so that I can put down some real times. It's hard to find races at this time of the year though. I'm almost tempted to do a time trial.
Our litte grassroots training group got hold of a key to the track club's clubhouse (was that a redundant sentence?), so we've started doing some core strength work in there with the medicine balls, swiss balls and a little bit of free weights. This should be a good time to build some strength with track coming up. |

Nice score on the clubhouse key. Graeme the gym rat...
If you're wanting to get some times to figure where you're at for track, a time trial would probably be as good as anything. Even a certified course might not be any more accurate than the 5k you just ran, so any road or XC time has to be taken with a fairly equal grain of salt.

I just saw on the news that Oregon has had a 6x increase in whooping cough cases this year, and we're just getting into the real sick season...

You guys be careful up there. Don't want a bunch of sickly runners all through the winter. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Normally, we all get vaccinated against it. _________________ Paul

Well, I was vaccinated and still got it. I read in Discover magazine that they are just discovering now that the vaccine is only 20-30% effective. Then again they also said that it can last up to 6 weeks, and I've had it for over 12.
The magazine also mentioned that it's spreading a lot lately and is less succeptable to antibiotics now. Not a good thing considering it can kill young infants. |

It snowed today!
On Tuesdays we have running clinics at Frontrunners and since there was an inch of snow I decided I'd run there instead of driving. It was good at first, until cars started spraying me with muddy slush. By the time I got to the shop I was soaking wet and covered in mud. Our usual group of 100-150 runners was reduced to 30 today, not surprisingly, but we decided to do a hard workout anyways (like there's any other kind).
We started with a 20 minute "warm up" jog in which we all ran though massive puddles and slush getting our shoes full of icy water. We managed to do 6 1km intervals without any confirmed cases of frostbite. By the end of the workout I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, not because I was warm but because everything else was so wet that it felt like I was carrying weights. As I type this message I still cannot feel my toes
Makes a good story though |

Those runs never turn out to be quite as much fun as you'd expect when you first look outside... But all the suffering during the workout pays off in extra smiles afterward!

Ran a brutal 10km cross country race today. Tons of steep hills and puddles. It even had one section where you had to wade through waist high water for about 30 meters. The finish was on the beach of a lake and you had to run through the water where it's about a foot deep.
It was cold, wet, muddy and painful.... just the way I like it
My time was 34:50. |
