WOW
I would love to see Tergat and Kannouchi lock horns in Greece next year. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

I know they've both said they want to run in Athens, so let's hope they are both healthy and so inclined when the time comes. Unlikely it'll be a fast race there, so I'd have to think Tergat would be heavily favored over Khannouchi (who's success in tactical races is less than stellar).
When talk of Tergat moving up to the marathon began, I was one of the people who thought he'd shatter the record and be far better at the distance than Gebresalassie...

Interesting factoid: Tergat is the first Kenyan to hold the men's marathon record. I doubt there's any other event in the sport can lay claim to such dominance in the all-time lists with no record setting performance by a country.
Interesting tidbit: Korir and Munji, the Kenyans in 2nd and 3rd place, were both apparently in the race as pacesetters. Most likely the best finish-by-rabbits ever, all considered.

I wonder if/when Bekele will try a marathon. He's still way too young now, but maybe in 5-10 years or so. _________________ November 9th... |

He's got the same tools that propelled Tergat to that level, although he's yet to prove himself at the half marathon.

Has he even done (m)any competitive halfs? I know he won the 12k world XC title, but didn't know if he did any distances beyond that. _________________ November 9th... |

XC is the longest I know of that he's run, but Tergat was also a 5k/10k/XC guy before really establishing his half marathon prowess. Bekele is still much younger than Tergat was when he entered the sport, let alone started setting records. The Ethiopians seem much better than the Kenyans in terms of longevity, so it'll be interesting to see how long he holds on and how much he improves.

Anyone think the marathon WR will fall below 2 hours by the end of this century?
I don't think so considering 5 minutes is a heck of a lot of time, even if it is over 26.2 miles. Even though humans are still evolving, there has to be a limit to how far humans can go. Unless Bekele and Radcliffe hook up and start having little Kenisa Jrs, I find it hard to believe that 2 hours will even be threatened in the next century. I do, however, think we'll see times of 2:03:20 or so in the next 20 years. _________________ November 9th... |

I don't really believe in making predictions along those lines. About the only thing we can predict with any certainty is that most long-term predictions will be wrong.

What? I though everyone likes making predictions about things we have NO clue about! I understand what you mean, but I make predictions to kind of keep my interest in things I normally wouldn't (the marathon isn't really the best spectator sport and there's pretty much no way of viewing them unless you want to travel to a different big city every two weeks or so). _________________ November 9th... |

I have no problem with predictions along the lines of what a specific athlete can do or what a generation can accomplish. Like I said, I was one who predicted Tergat would smash the marathon record. But predictions about what will happen in the next 100 years? That puts us in the dangerous position of making predictions like the infamous one that the 4:00 mile could not be broken based on scientific evidence.
