I have no idea what the answer to this might be, if there even is one, but boy is it a doozy...

What's the longest single, non-relay race that someone has worn spikes for the entire distance? My guess would be XC, with distances commonly as long as 12k. Any ultra runners pound out 100 miles in spikes on rocky trails?

What prompted that question Dan ??? Why would anyone run off track for any distance in spikes ?? That would be rather suicidal wouldn't it ????

My guess would be either Toshihiko Seko who holds the world record for the 30k (1:29:18.Cool or if he didn't set it then Arturo Barrios who holds the world record for the one hour run (21,101m or just longer than a half marathon) since both reocrds are recognized as official I am assuming that they were run on the track. If that was the case, then I think that they would probably have been wearing spikes.

Actually spikes are generally the favored shoes for cross country.

Ah, good call on the hour runs. Those would most likely be run in spikes, although Geb wore flats in his recently aborted record attempt at the "distance."

That's what happens when I finally get a decent night's sleep. I wake up with crazy thoughts...

Before reading DG's post's my first thought would have been the 1 hour run also. I can't imagine anyone using spikes in an ultra of any kind due to the lack of cushioning, but our ultra experts, Mad Dog Mike and Micah, would have to have the last word on that. As far as spikes in cross country, I think that would be imperative due to traction problems from sharp turns, wet weather, etc. DG???

Without a doubt. Not only do cross country runners wear spike but they often wear long spikes. The average spike length for a race on the track is 1/8 inch. I have worn 3/8 inch spikes in a couple of races on wet and muddy coarses. And I was the concervative one a couple of my teammates ran those races with 1/2 inch spikes in!

There a lot of 24 hour ultras on the track and even some 100 milers on the track but I 've never heard of anyone running them in spikes. It's got to be cross country.
