I just wanted to say that Im looking
foward to the race in South Africa on
Friday April 12,2002. It is going to
feature the South African newcomer Morne
Nagle against some of the worlds best 100
meter sprinters. To name a few,Tim
Montgomery going for a new world record,
Marcus Brunson, and Shawn Vries. I think
even though its very early in the outdoor
season,we should see some great times.I
also think this will be the first time a
white man not of Western African Descent
runs under 10 seconds. What do you guys
think? Also, does anyone think that Tim
Montgomery will break the world record
this year.I think he will.Go USA.

I think that Nagel's 200 PR last week (20.11) shows great promise for the 100 this year .. Only problem I see is that if he is peaking at this point in the sesason he may not have enough for when the "real" racing takes place during the European season ..
As far as his going sub 10.00, there have been lots of sprinters in the 20.10 range that have not gone sub 10.00 ... I think it puts him closer, but sub 10 is another gear .. The one advantage I give him is that he is similar to Montgomery is stature and style, so perhaps he will be the one !!!
Montgomery and the WR .. I don't think so .. Mostly becasue he seems to accelerate best when he is behind (even though he is a good starter) .. Now he could possibly go 9.79 in a race with Greene .. But Greene would have crossed the line in 9.74 or so ... ... In all seriousness though, 9.79 (or better) is extraordinary .. The fact that Greene has run that and so close again is extraordinary .. Which in my opinion menas he has something much better inside .. And if he hits it right could put the record in the FloJo/MJ range (10.49/19.32) ..
I think this weekend will be a great barometer .. But I think MOntgomery is smart enough not to be trying to peak right now .. Which would mean something around 10.00 give or take a few hundreths .. |

From a post on the t-and-f list:
Quote: | From Pretoria today -
100m: 1 Tim Montgomery (US) 9,94sec, 2 Shawn Crawford (US) 9,99, 3 Morne
Nagel 10,13
Nagel was a bit on edge, with two false starts. |
What's the altitude of Pretoria? I know MJ had some success running fast early season times thereabouts...

Not sure about the altitude, alathough I do know it is high .. Marcus La Grange won the 400 in 44.65 during the meeting which is extremenly fast for ihm .. Might even be a PR I believe ... And so far I have not been able to find a wind reading on othe 100 race ...
Race does give a few indications however .. One, that Montgomery is fit .. Two, that Crawford is becoming a better sprinter and should threaten sub 20.00 ... And three, that Nagelis either not yet ready for this group or the 200 last weekend took a bit much out of him ...

Guess I spoke too soon .. Found wind reading ... +6mps ... So quite windy .... BUT !!! Check this out .. Men's 200 with 0 mps wind Crawford runs 19.85 !!!!! with 2, 3 & 4 @ 20.42, 20.43, 20.44 ... Now THAT is an impressive run showing MJ like potential ... |

MOre information on the South AFrica race .. Wind reading was actually .6 mps which makes the race legal ... Altitude in Pretoria is 1800 meters which is quite a lot of altitude ... So we will have to see what all do closer to sea level .. Still that gives Crawford an impressive single day sprint double of 9.99 / 19.85 ... Not too shabby ... |

That's a Boldon-like double! Lots of altitude, but didn't MJ open in the mid 19.9's in South Africa? That definitely has potential for Crawford...

MJ opened in South AFrica a couple of times I believe .. The one negative about doing so is that generally those times end up being an individuals seasonal bests !!!
Something about altitude ... But altitude or not what Crawford did is awesome .. He has been looking good this year (isn't he wearing braces?) ... Based on previous seasons that would put him around 9.88 and 19.60 by seasons end ...
Of course here on US soil JUstin Gatlin quietly went 10.00 and 20.06 .. And as I have said earlier he will be the upstart for this year .. HE will beat MOntgomery soundly .. The only one that can stop him is MO ... |

OK ... Further checking shows that Gatlin ran a non anchor 44.2 on Tennessee's 4x4 !!!! Making him easily the strongest sprinter out there today !!! I say he runs 9.85 and 19.70 - barring injury ... |

Smokin indeed .. And smokin this weekened was Mr JJ JOohnson who ran a 9.95 at Mt Sac !!! As I said during the indoor season, his indoor running indicated the ability to go sub 10 and he has done that .. And this early in the season I would say he may be able to go sub 9.90 !!
Remeber a few weeks ago we were touting the women's 800 as THE event this year ?? Well after the past 2 weekends that may switch to the men's 100 !! Fredericks and Montgomery at 9.94's (albeit Montgomery's at altitude) and now JJ at 9.95 .. Gatlin at 10.00 .. And this is all about a month earlry .. We haven't even heard from Boldon, Greene and company yet !!!
I'm wondering if we are going to get them all at USATF nationals this year with there being no major team to shot for ... Or if we are going to have to wait until the circuit to get a real hot race ?? I say we something special around Laussane or Zurich this year ..
Did we have JJ Johnson on our list for the fantasy league ?? (I may have to re-evaluate that) |

You may well be right. The only problem with picking the men's 100 as the event of the year is that as long as Maurice is healthy, there's really no question of the outcome. Even if 8 guys run sub-10 every time out, it won't have the same suspenseful excitement of an 800 where any of 5 women could win.

We've got him in the 200, but did he run any 100's last year? I'll have to go back and check...

I agree, except that I think this is going to be a break out year for the 100 .. I am expecting to see a few sub 9.90s this year ... Still think that MO will be number one .. But I think that there will be more people to push him towards a new record !!!! |

There's been lots to discuss on the sprint side of things .. What's going on distance wise .. Nothing major as yet .. Why not ?? And I'm tlking more so Americans .. The WR in the marathon carried a lot of track talent with it .. And as usual I expect big htings out of Tergat and Geb .. But why onthing outstanding 800 an dup ?? ;-( |

Very little track distance stuff, it seems. Even the near-sprint 800 is in a lull, with Bucher injured and Borzo working on the 400...
