Now Dan who said we disagree ??? ... Just sounds like it sometimes ... My biggest point is that those who have been "busted" have gotten a bad rap as if they were no talent dogs who were only good simply becasue they were users ... And unfortunately the biggest sellers of that rhetoric are the National bodies themselves ... Ben was great period ... Yes he used drugs .... Yes it helped him run 9.79 ... But that wasn't the reason he ran 9.79 !!! He ran 9.79 becasue he learned how to ... Becasue he had a superior start ... Becasue his technique was near flawless ... Because he had incentive in a bitter rival .. Becasue his mid race transition was a work of art ... Could he have done 9.79 without the drugs ... Maybe ... We may never know ... But I think he could have done 9.89 without them and that still would have been a record !!! Anyway .. Not to beat a dead horse ... But the whole system is screwe(y) ... And the sport is hurting becsue of it ... |

I agree with everything you said, up until:

How can you separate what drugs helped him to do from what he learned to do? We have no way of knowing how much of his end result was due to great talent, superb training, or performance enhancing drugs. That's the disagreement I'm getting at. It's not that I'm saying drugs are the solution or that he would've been less of an athlete without them, just that we cannot separate several very important factors, including innate ability, effects of training, and drug boost. What we do know is that drugs can help and that Ben did use drugs, so it seems a huge leap of faith to assume he was capable of 9.79 on the basis of ability alone. That is not to say he is any less deserving of praise than any of the other sub-10 folk, simply because there is plenty of reason to assume many of them are no more clean than he was.

But I think we are saying the same thing ... If you will look back I said I wasn't sure if he could run 9.79 without drugs but that I thought he was capable of 9.89 without drugs ... That still would have been a WR at the time and is still great now ... My point simply being that oto much emphasis is put on the fact that any drug user uses/used them !!! Because we DON'T know the extent of their effects ... Yet everyone talks about "drug use" as this definitive source of superhuman performance ... Not you per se, but the EXPERTS ... The rulers of the sport ... Those who should be protecting and building it yet continue to do omre damage to it ... |
