Hi All
On Robert Taylor, he actually ran his lifetime best of 10.16 in the same Munich qf that Borzov ran 10.07 - also his lifetime best. Taylor only had time to do a few quick stretches, although I imagine that the adrenlin of the dash to the stadium was probably a very effective warm-up!
The US attitude to Borzov's win was best summed up in the headline "The World'S Fastest Man Is A Commie" the next day. Good though Hart and Robinson were, had they been in the race they would simply have pushed Borzov to run faster. Borzov was one of the greats.
Good game this Conway - name this race:
9.97
10.03
10.06
10.06
10.15
10.19

Let's see ... Dan .. Yes the European Championships ... You named them all EXCEPT the Euros ...
Justin was absolutely right about the 72 Olympics ... Althogh I think Hart showed on the anchor of the relay that he would have been a match for Borzov .. No lock mind you .. but they may have made each other run the first legitimate sub 10.00 !!!
As for Justin's race that was agood one .. At first glance I was tempted to say Goteborg in 95 ... But looking beyond the first couple of places I believe it to be Zurich '83 ... That would be:
1. 9.97 Calvin Smith
2. 10.03 Mel Lattany
3. 10.06 Ron Brown
4. 10.06 Emmitt King
And if I am not mistaken was the second time Calvin Smith broke 10.00 following his WR 9.93 earlier in the year ... Legitimizing his WR ... Was also equal to Carl Lewis' best time that year set earlier at Modesto (I was at that race !!)
So here is another Dan, Justin, Micah name this race !!
1. 9.93
2. 9.97
3. 10.00
4. 10.04
5. 10.07
6. 10.08
7. 10.09
Look familiar ??? |

Hmm, I'm thinking this one is a trick question involving Ben Johnson...? Here's what I was able to find:
'88 Zurich Meet, round 2:
1) Carl Lewis
2) Calvin Smith
3) ???
4) Chidi Imoh
5) Linford Christie
6) Dennis Mitchell
7) Raymond Stewart
No mention of third place, so I'm guessing that was Ben and his mark was removed but places were not adjusted because it wasn't a championship meet?

Now there you go cheating again .. You're supposed to know these things ... Yes it was Zurich 88 .. Key point there being it was prior to the games and was key to eveyone believing that Carl was ready to do Ben in at the games ... Most of the major players were there and it was Carl's opportunity to show that he was THE MAN going into the games .. And the rest as they say is history ...
Here's one for you ...
1. 22.12
2. 22.12
3. 22.37
Try that ...
AND
1. 49.77
2. 49.79
3. 49.90
Those might keep you busy til I get home from work ... (See I have to do this without aid of files) .. |

I prefer to think of it as educated guessing! Besides, anyone else if free to come along and answer while I'm off researching...
I should have connected the dots on the Zurich race, but assigning times that I probably never new in the first place to the situation wasn't quite clicking upstairs...
I don't have any guesses yet on the two latest questions, but I'll hold off on educating myself on the subject until others have a chance to demonstrate their knowledge. Justin should be up in a few hours...

I have no idea about what I assume are women's 200m and 400m races. 22.12 is very slow...below the radar I'd say.
Lewis's 9.93 in Zurich was actually a WR, equalling Calvin Smith's from 83 and Lewis's own from the 87 WC. Lewis broke those with his 9.92 in Seoul, then ran 9.86 for his fourth 100m WR in 91. If, that is, you exclude Johnson's 9.83 and 9.79.....

I'm sure Dan will "figure out" the two races .. The 200 is slow, but is from a major meet ... I guess that would make Marion's run at lst year's World's pedestrian ...
Your Zurich observation brings up an interesting point ... IT is generally acknowledged that Lewis only held the WR in the 100 2 times - his 9.92 (second place finish) in Seoul and his 9.86 at Tokyo .. You give him two more records - his two 9.93's ... I am curious as to how the record books address awarding records that were garnered in races where the record breaker didn't actually win the race !!! There is definitely a "drafting" effect if you will when running behind in a sprint ... And when you are talking about 100ths of a second it seems that should be a major issue ...
The other issue is that Ben's 9.83 was actually ratified ... And while the iaaf just sort of took it away (he never tested positive for the Rome race) was it done "legally" ...
Just some questoins .. |

Ok, Justin had his chance to answer it straight up...
200m: '95 WC in Göteborg:
1) Merlene Ottey
2) Irina Privalova
3) Galina Malchugina
400m: '97 WC in Athens:
1) Cathy Freeman
2) Sandie Richards
3) Jearl Miles-Clark
Close races!

Actually the 200 was not that close ... Or that slow ... The actual winner of that race was Gwen Torrence .. Torrence won in a screaming 21.77 but was DQ'd for a purported lane violation ... And as fast as the 21.77 was it was run INTO a headwind of -2.2mps !!!! Ottey and Privalova were actualloy fighting it out for 2nd at the time the race was run !!!!
Hmmmm ... Let's see ... How about ...
1. 1:45.9
2. 1:45.9
3. 1:46.0
AND
1. 10.15
2. 10.20
3. 10.21
4. 10.24
5. 10.24
6. 10.29
One for you and one for Justin ... Or none for either of you ... |

Ah yes, the infamous lane violation.

Nope, my resources don't permit me to make an educated guess on anything that slow...

Ah ... the resources ... ... Well the 800 is the final of the 1972 Olympics
1. 1:45.9 Dave Wottle
2. 1:45.9 Yevgeni Arzhanov
3. 1:46.0 Mike Boit
Wottle of the Borzakovsky type finish ... And the last American to win an 800 title ...
The second is the final of the 1986 Eouropean Championships 100
1. 10.15 Linford Christie
2. 10.20 Steffan Bringman
3. 10.21 Bruno Marie Rose
4. 10.24 Thomas Schroeder
5. 10.24 Allan Wells
6. 10.29 Mike McFarlane
Thought for sure Justin would get this one as it was the changing of the guard for British sprinting ... The end of the Wells era and the emergence of LInford Christie !!!!
Hmmm ... let's see ... How about ???
1. 10.05
2. 10.07
3. 10.09
AND
1. 49.94
2. 50.38
3. 50.40
Both important races ...
