Can't say I'm really surprised, given how politics invade every niche of our lives, but I don't recall ever hearing that side of the story previously.

All I have to say there is consider the source here. Yes there was some gamesmanship going on there and I believe there is some more going on in that article.

Interesting story, and a good read. I wonder how accurate it was. Was Johnson actually at that conversation. Bowerman was the Head Coach for that Olympiad. It doesn't sound like something he would let by so flippantly, but I could be wrong.
Ended up reading through all of Johnson's blogs. Some were quite interesting. I especially liked the one where he revisits stride rate vs stride length after the Beijing Olympics. Thumbs Up

I would think he's too well known of a name to totally make something up like that, but I could see it being a slanted perspective, muddied in clarity nearly 40 years after the fact.
