It can always be misleading to compare athletes by their age progression as we are all aware that some athletes shine early and soon burnout whereas others mature late but go on to great things.

So often Wariners progression for example is compared to MJ's at the same age but that does not necessarily mean that by the time he is 29(MJ's age in 1996) he should according to a gradual mathematical improvement be running something like 42.8 or 42.9.

Granted that Wariner has already achieved what most athletes will never be able to replicate so he has approached that greatness anyway. But maybe he has peaked.

I'm in agreement there. I've never put much stock into age group competition or records, even pointing to Alan Webb's HS mile record as insignificant unless he could build on it at the senior level, which he's only marginally managed to do.

To underline that view further you only have to trawl through the list of national, continental and world youth or junior record holders to find that only a small percentage have been able to go on to great things at senior level.
