Very impressive.
I remember a few years back, Ritzenheim was getting major props as the record setting HS'er, but Tegenkamp defeated him at the US Junior XC Nationals at Fort Vancouver across the river from Portland. The extra year of college training (19 and under) obviously helped Tegenkamp on the longer course, but it was clear that this guy who most people knew nothing about was every bit as good as Ritz.

I have always seen him as good and have heard goo dthings about him - unfortunately like Ritz of late he has had some injury issues. This has been a good year for him with some solid training behind him... I don't think anyone expected him to make that big a jump that quickly though... its huge

Very impressed from the stand point it gets us closer to being competitive !!!! Needs to be under 13:00, but this says he will get there !!!

I'm hoping that there is a collective confidence boost going on within the US distance community right now. Meb and Deena have shown that American runners can run with the best in the marathon and with 4 US runners in the top 10 at Boston this year I think the marathoners may be approaching the "swagger" stage. If that same feeling can filter down to the 10K and 5K guys it could be very interesting in the coming years.

I am hoping that too however I have to take a little exception to the Kennedy Comment - I don't think many folks realize how good he was for a long period of time sure he had only the 2 times dipping under 13:00 - however if you look at performances Teg's 13:04.90 only puts him 10th behind a whole slew of Kennedy performances 17 of the 38 times a US runner has been under 13:15 belong to Mr Kennedy 15 of the top 17 times an American ever ran are his... not bad... eh

That says more about the lack of US competition than anything Kennedy did at the top end... Sure, he ran lots of sub 13:10's, but how is that significant globally for a national record holder?
Besides, the bulk of his faster times came prior to the two sub-13's. It's not like he hit that mark a ton afterward.

Have to agree with Dan ... What that shows is how mediocre we've been for far too long !!!! We're at a point where the global standard for being competitive in a major race is somewhere around 12:50, yet here we are talking about how bright the future looks with someone going 13:04 !! Not a great picture ... Good for Teg, but not very bright overall ...

I don't know about PRs, but the top 5k guys all saw fit to be 1500 runners that meet, making a mess of Fantasy scoring...

I believe that is a PR for Bekele ... And all those guys running the 1500 just goes to what I've been preaching forever - that our distance runners need to work more on SPEED !!!
Course I've always been a lone voice in the dark on that one ... And am routinely told I know nothing about distance running ... But in the meantime we keep falling farther and farther behind the rest of the world ...
I guess folk may get a clue when Webb moves up eventually and breaks the AR ...
