Best 5000m man for the U.S. I would have to go with two individual who have recorded good peformances but haven't fully displayed their potential in the event:

Benard Lagat
Alan Webb

Have Lagat or Webb ever run a 5k on the track professionally?

I don't think either of them have. But if we are going to talk potential, how about Galen Rupp? His 2nd place in the 10K at the NCAA's is very impressive. Can he run the 5K too?

Micah

Being that Galen is the High School and AJR in the 5000m I guess he could run the 5000m as well. I was impressed by his top 8 finish at last year 2004 World Junior Championship which was won by Augustine Choge (12:57.01 at age 17 in 2004)!

How old is Lagat? I wonder if he'll ever move up.

I would guess Lagat is about 29, give or take.

Dan do you know who Augustine Choge's manager is...? While he (manager) wasn't there at Augustine's birth world reknown and new U.S. citizen Benard Lagat was and he vouches for Augustine's birth as well as the birth certificate. I agree there are some Africans who aren't sure of they exact birthdate but its not that common now in 2005 and Augustine appears to be his documented age. Still impressive times for such a young athlete I agree!

Just thought I would post this about Lagat

He has already run the 5K a few times (set his PR this year at 13:14) he was also a pretty good XC guy back when he was at WSU. so yeah he certainly woul dbe a good 5K guy -if he trained for it... certainly woul dhave a devastating kick if it wasn't drilled out of him...

As far as Webb is concerned he also has already run the 5k he has won the 5K the last two years at Penn... hmmm I think last year was like 13:40's and if I recall this year was faster.... OK looked it up 13:30.25

Wow, I didn't know he had turned in a 13:14. That definitely makes him legit if he were to choose to focus on the event.

Iaasc Songok has just threw his name in the hat as a INCREDIBLE 5000m talent (3:30.99 1500m PB 2004) by defeating Eliud Kipchoge twice in two 5000m races. Will Iaasc become another one season wonder like Abrahm Chebii or will his coach Brother Colm continue to steer him to greatness?

In a well paced race, I'd go with Bekele. He has that ability to run endlessly at a high rate of speed.

Based on Webb's Pre showing, I could envision a race in the 13:15 range.

Rupp may not have the speed at this point. He did run a sub 7:50 3K, but he hasn't broken 4 for the mile, or even 3:45 for 1500, I think.

Goucher might be the next American to break 13:00

The next American to run sub 13 minutes would have to be Alan Webb as he will have the perfect opportunity as he is entered to run the 5000m vs KENENISA BEKELE at the Super Grand Prix meet in Paris, France. Alan Webb's 10000m debut of 27:34 could have been slightly faster if he was being towed instead of one of the leaders in the field, which bode well on him threatening the 13 minute barrier in France. Very Happy

I think El Guerrouj if he was a long distance runner. Hes a middle distance runner, and if at that level he beat Bekele, he would do much better if he was long distance.
