So I am out running my 5K last night on the gorgeous new Icahn Stadium - my one chance to run one this summer (I may run a 3k there later in the summer) and as I come around in lap 6 around 6 - 6:03 pace I feel a pop in my achilles and between the turn through the line my left leg tighened enough for me to just step off the track... upsetting and frustrating but the right thing to do..

I don't think its torn or anything because like an idiot I went out and ran a bit this morning got in 4 miles - real tight to start but after a mile it had loosened significantly so I continued on somewhere between 7:30 and 8 min pace... so a steady diet of ice and Advil I guess...

Opinions on what happened?

Tough to say for sure, but it sounds like something caused the tendon to tighten up enough to pop as it rubs across the bone. Once any inflammation dies down, add lots of gentle stretching to the routine.

Were you wearing new shoes or any related changes that might be putting pressure on the achilles area?

Nothing as far as the running was concerned shoes not new but not old - I have trained in them before and raced as well (they are spikes) first race of the year in those spikes but have used them in training already to kind of acclimate myself to them again - maybe not enough although I did do 300M repeats with the steeple pit in the middle so I woul dthink they were pretty well stressed before hand.

It is a new track so perhaps that surface is a little harder than the surface I trained on with them but I don't know...

I don't like any sensation that is described as a "pop" and especially in the achilles area. Be real, real careful with this one. I can't imagine what it would be. If you tore the tendon I don't think you would even be walking so it probably isn't that but still, watch it real close and take it easy for a while as you monitor how it reacts in the next week.

Good luck.

I had felt something similar once before about a year ago in the middle of a tempo type run and kept running that day - so I am hoping it will be better soon I am going to take it easy for a few days no running today which was actually kind of cool since I got to watch the woman I coach on the track and be like a coach but I don't want to get too used to that if you know what I mean... haha
