Well, it's impossible for us to know the full story and surrounding issues. Not implying that you're not telling us everything, just that your coach has his own motivations that may or may not have anything to do with you and we can only guess at what they are.
From what you've said, it does sound a bit extreme, but maybe that's his way of initiating freshmen into the program, or maybe there's just something about you that rubs him the wrong way...
