Here, we are talking about how she is already over the hill -- going down, but I want to point out a couple things that escaped our scrutiny so far. First, Marion Jones has never been a 400--meter specialist. In the miserable performance over 400 meters, she ran decent first 150 to 200 meters. Second, she cannot jump, and she gets the run--on right rarely. However, the run--on is 95% of the success in the broad jump, and she needs to get her run--on right only once in the tree attempts. As long as she can run really fast over 40 yards, and is a little lucky with her run--on, she can do well in the broad jump.

Any female that can run an open 400 meters under 50 is a quartermiler ... While Marion may not have run the 400 as her primary event, she has aquitted herself more than well when she has in the past ... No different than Gwen Torrence or Irina Privalova - spinters who were equally adept at running the 400 ... Or even Valerie Brisco or Chandra Cheeseborough - who ran it well enough to move from the short sprints up to the 400 ...
Having routinely run the 400 at Mt SAC in the past as her "opener" for the season to see "where she was at" and running anywhere from 49.5 ot 50.5, that 55.03 was MISERABLE ... And says that where she is at, is no where close to where she has been in the past ... It is indeed a great indicator of where her training and conditioning are relative to her better seasons ...
As for the long jump, as her speed slows, so will her distances in the long jump ... Because, as you say, she is totally dependent on what she can generate on the runway to determine how well she jumps ...
Marion is in trouble ... There is no way around that ... And she has been for a long time ... She didn't make the team last year on the track ... And couldn't medal in the jump ... Her last decent year was 2002 and her last great year was 2000 .... That's a longo time ago in the world of sports ... _________________ Conway

I'm not sure I take the conspiracy theory as the reason for her failure in the relay last year ... I just don't think she had enough to get thet baton through the zone ... That said, I just wouldn't want to build my relay squad around her ...
And, personally, if I were in charge of putting together a relay at this juncture I would do it with the youngsters ... The day of Inger Miller and Marion, and Gaines, and Devers is really done ... I would go with a combination of:
Angela Williams
Lauryn Williams
Ashley Owens
Allyson Felix
This is the present and future of US sprinting ... Let them begin to work together now and develop something special ... _________________ Conway

That may not be a winning team just yet, but it has the potential to become a very good one.

I was just following what Riddick said. I thought that if he had coached Tonique to success, then him saying Marion was going to run fast would be right on the money. How wrong I was!
The Kansas relays are coming up this weekend and Marion is running again. To be honest I have never really been a big fan of hers, for some reason I just didn't really like her as a character. Despite that I do not diregard the fact that she was a great athlete though.
Greene is also running in a jam-packed 100m against JJ Johnson (9.95PR from '02), Rae Edwards (9.99w this year), Mark Jelks (10.01w & 10.03w this year), Kaaron Conwright (HSI guy, good on relays), John Capel (9.95PR from '04) and Jason Smoots (monster physique, good 60m guy, very explosive). If so, that should the best race so far of the early season, apart from Spearmon's 19.97 of course. _________________ Doubt whom you will, But never yourself.

Then don't read her book from last year... It'll just reinforce your hesitation. I didn't even make it all the way through it -- got too tired of the finger pointing.
