Yeah just amazing to see that guy in full flight - always seemed to be a real stand up guy as well.
I hope he has just an amazing final year

He'll probably end up being a difficult guy to figure his place in the history of the event, given his overall dominance and various misfortunes (country inelligibility, malaria, injuries, etc.) at the most inopportune times.

Agreed - I think overall it will be tough but there will be no denying that he is one of the best the event has seen - say top 10 I would think...

No question top-10. I'd put him top-2, but I just can't quite decide how he ranks relative to Coe, who also had his share of ups and downs. Snell and Cruz and Boit and a few others might merit consideration, but certainly not enough to bump Kipketer out of the top-5.

I'd put him at #1 ... I liked Coe a lot - one of my favorite all time Brits - but Kipketer did a lot more ...
Coe split his time between the 8 & 15 ... He had a couple of great seasons, but could never win the big one .... Ovett beat him in Moscow ... Cruz in Los Angeles ... And in between Ferner beat him at Euros ...
On the other hand Kipketer did win in Goteborg, Athens, and Seville ... He just got beat out in Sydney ... I think he had the greatest period of time ever in the event when you look at the fact that he did win AND his sequence of marks is unequaled by anyone ...

I think it would be hard to argue anyone but Kipketer as number 1.

I may be eating my words though I just found the website that lists best performances up to and including 2001
to that point 1:43 had only been broken 50 times
almost 40% of those times were by one individual - Kipketer 19 times out of the 50
Coe was only under 1:43 twice
Johnny Gray 4 times
Kimutai - 4 times
Cruz - 6 times
very interesting

You beat me to it ... I was going to look up times under 1:43 casue I knew that Coe only had a couple and that Kipketer had many ... Coe has more ranking points only because Kipketer had the years of illness .... He won more titles, ran fast more consistently, and ranked one more times ... I think that out points Coe's edge in total TFN ranking points .... Coe has a bit more longevity, but Kipketer was far and away the better performer ...

Yeah, the top performances lists for the 800m really highlight Kipketer's dominance and consistency, and Coe's lack of top level performances really makes it tough for me to give him as much credit as most people do.

I had planned to post something else but got sidetracked with the whole Kipketer thing I think why not for fun put together an all-time list for people in the half/800M... I will start to put mine togetehr as well
As far as Lagat goes will have to put another post together when I get time but suffice it to say I am pleased with it. I have some reservations but i think there coul dbe more good than bad regarding it
