Just when you thought they were headed in the right direction, check out USATF's newly unveiled mascot...

Look on the right side of the page. :t-: This has been quite the topic on the t-and-f list today, and nary a positive review has been forthcoming. My suggested name is FATSU.

OK so whydidn'tthey just adopt a jigaboo as the official mascot of USATF ??? That is about the most degrading thing I have seen since pre civil rights !!!! It should be offensive to just about anyone in the civilized world Exclamation

I don't know what a jigaboo is, but if it's anywhere near as bad as the USATF embarrassment, I'm afraid to ask...

Although I haven't seen it myself, the USATF mascot is apparently an exact duplicate of the one used this past summer at the World Basketball Championships that the US fared so well at. The popular theory is that the mascot was being sold super cheap as a result.

usually intended as an ethnic slur. [vulgar and offensive]

I use the word here as during slavery and for a great while after there were characatures of jigaboos that closely resemble this mascot ... But of course as usual I am probably the only one who sees this connection so it is probably a moot point ... So carry on ...

Out of curiousity what does the track list have to say ....

That's my name. Maybe some of the baby boomers who ran track in the '60's and '70's who now run USATF are having flashbacks from their college days!!!

I took a look at both pictures, and you are right, they are the same.

Where they asked you to name the mascot, I entered "Ya got to be kidding... Sell it back while you can" Rolling Eyes

I'm sincerely hoping it's a website gimmick, an early April Fool's joke. If it's not, I'm seriously going to be worried about the "head" minds of our sport's association.

I think calling this thing a cross between a globetrotter and the cookie monster is an insult to all the muppets and anyone who's ever fallen for the old confetty in a water bucket gag.

Here's a silly question, why on earth does the USATF need a mascot :question:

Why not follow the lead of the NBA or MLB where you take the sillutte of someone and turn it into a logo or something along those lines... Oh wait that would be a logical thing to do, which appearently the USATF is banned from doing by order of devine mandate.

And for goodness sake if your going to have a mascot (which I think are all rather stupid) at least have a cool one something like the old Hornets mascot who wore that teal spandex spiderman style suit and would do front flipping dunks off a miny tramp. Instead the USATF buys the Richard Simmons of mascots.... sheesh Rolling Eyes

I was thinking the logo idea myself ... Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, Evelyn Ashford, Jim Ryun, Pre ... I mean come on now its not like we're lacking in history in the US !!!!!!!!!!
