All-Time 100m Top 10 Lists, by Justin Clouder

The following table lists 100m all-time Top 10 career averages for around 120 men. Marks included are wind-legal, auto-timed only; disqualified, suspect, wind-assisted, and hand timed performances are excluded. Clearly the restriction to auto-times handicaps great runners from the 60s and 70s, when auto-timing was rare.

Athletes marked * have improved their place in the list since last year. Where an average has improved, the previous mark is listed in the column to the far right.

The list has expanded from the 87 athletes included last year. This is in part due to extending the cut-off point beyond 10.200, in part through new entrants from the 2002 season and in part through adding in athletes omitted or overlooked before.

The performance lists on which these are based include all sub-10.20 performances all-time and all performances to 10.40 to 1987 and from 1997-2002. Times of 10.20-10.40 are missing for 1988-1996, meaning several athletes who would otherwise be included are absent. These are listed at the bottom of the table. Errors and omissions are inevitable; the author would greatly appreciate further information, corrections and comments, especially from anyone able to provide deep performance lists for 87-96.
