Bob Hayes died last night in Jacksonville Florida at age 59 from prostate cancer ... Many have considered him the fastest human ever ... Whether he was or not, Bob was an indelible figure in the sport ... And if you have ever seen him run it is burned into your memory ... It is a great loss to sport ...

Yep, sad day.

On a lighter note, I guess he just couldn't stand to see Tim with the new record. Smile

You know I was thinking about saying that in the original post but wasn't sure how people would take it ...

Is that something akin to putting both your foot and Marion's spikes in your mouth?? Wink Wink

I think the SportsServer article did a nice job pointing out how he was shunned by the football world. He obviously belongs in the Hall of Fame, but then I think Pete Rose belongs, also. I think it is a sad circumstance, because in this day and age, at 59, you are looking at 20 more years of productive living.

Could be, but I try to steer clear of plain idiocy and stick with the good ol' fashion offensive stuff...

I'm sure most of you have already read Justin's excellent article on Bob Hayes, but here it is again for those that have missed it or just want to be reminded what a tremendous athlete Hayes was:

I was (am) a fan of Bob Hayes on two levels, I obviously love track and I'm also a pretty big Dallas Cowboys fan. Bib Hayes tied the world record in the 100m and forced the invention of the zone defense in football. His later drug arrests have kept him out of the football hall of fame, which to me is injustice. The fact that OJ is still in the football hall of fame and Bob Hayes isn't (that is if were counting off the field stuff) to me makes about as much sense as a race walker using starting blocks. And when or if there is a track and field hall of fame Bob Hayes should also be included amoung the greats there as well.

They'd have to be those silly one-pedal blocks, otherwise the race walker would be disqualified at the start for having both feet off the ground. Wink

I remember Bob Hayes more from his football days. I was not a track fan when he ran. But even at a young age I thought it made so much sense to take a sprinter and make him a wide receiver. Of course I was too young to realize how difficult the transition is.
