|
|
Paul got a sneak peak of some of the changes waiting in the wings for the running links directory, but here's a general overview:
- fully dynamic directory system -- updates reflected in real time
- user reviews (that means you!)
- detailed view of links where applicable
- integrated Amazon.com book/movie pages -- get the full product info and latest price right here on Run-Down!
- browsable virtual dead link directory structure (mirrors the real directory, but for inactive links; replaces the current jumbled dead link category) -- easily see if a link is in the target category, just inactive
- search entire directory or just current category
- user accounts for easier resource modifications down the road
- probably a few others I'm forgetting...
Also, I am planning a few changes to the category names, both for purposes of intuitiveness and visibility. Your thoughts on these proposed changes and any other suggestions would be appreciated. Note: -> represents a name change and => represents a structure change.
- Results and Events -> Events and Results (same for Triathlon/Results categories)
- Other -> Miscellaneous (same for Triathlon/Other category)
- Publications/Books & Movies => Popular Entertainment (new category)
- Publications -> News Media
- move US & Canadian events/results into a North American category; ditto for international
- maybe add an Adventure Racing category somewhere?
Dan

Wait till it's live before you case any undeserved congratulatory remarks... I've been waiting 6 or 7 weeks for a bug to be fixed (actually, just a reply addressing the problem) with the directory program. Once that is sorted out, I think it'll be ready to load up.

For me, two of the ancillary bonuses of posting on and using this website have been that my writing and computing skills have increased. So far, all the changes that have occurred have increased the usability of this site, and I suspect that will continue to be the case in the future.

Color me stupid, but... For the above mentioned Virtual Dead Link categories, I've got the following instructions on each such page:
Quote: | Note: The links in this category are known to be inactive for a variety of reasons. If you know of a new location or status update for any of them, please use the Report Dead Link option to inform us. Thanks! |
Which is gotten to by clicking on the links that say:
Quote: | View Dead Links in this Category |
Is that not pretty self explanatory what the Dead Links categories contain? I sure thought so, but then I get a Dead Link submission for one of the links already quarantined in one such category:
Quote: | Old sites need to be updated! |
Uh... Feedback doesn't get much more constructive or insightful than that... I hate to say it, but I think the average I.Q. of netizens is in the single digits. The level of idiocy I am stymmied by in daily email is simply astounding. I would hope the theme and tone of Run-Down attracts a somewhat more intelligent crowd, but sometimes I have to wonder if that goal is in vain...
