I won't even think about entering a race until I can get in sub 17 minute 5k shape at worst, and that is still about a month or more of good training away. Ideally I'd like to get in around 16 weeks of running over 50 miles a week with over half those over 70, and then do a few races this fall to help with my focus while still building my training towards a fast track 10k in the spring. Although that will be difficult right now, I just took a night job to help make ends meet, and I'm not sure how much time and energy I'll have left over for training
And Paul your are correct again, I can live with being slow myself so long as my athletes are running well. If you can't be a star athlete the next best thing is to be the coach of star athletes _________________ Time is the fire in which we burn |

Let's see what is that old saying ???
"Those who can't, teach .. Those who can't teach, teach others to teach .. And those who can't teach others to teach are administrators" !!!
Micah you're my idol ... I'll have to look at the local reace schedule and find a race to target for !!! Course my initial goal will be to just finish since it will prolly have to be a 5k or something ... Could be worse I suppose ... But has been too long ... Have to get back at it ... |

I went into physical therapy today wearing a Western States 100 tee shirt. My therapist looked at it and I said "Hurry up and get me patched up, this is my next race!" He just rolled his eyes and laughed.

Good news and bad news.
Good news: Conway's planning a race.
Paul is in rehab.
Bad news: Conway will beat my butt with his times.
Paul will make it to Western States before I do.

Sounds like it could be one of the greatest match races of all time, I can see it now
PRE RACE ANALYSIS: MICAH WARD vs CONWAY
How they stack up
Micah: Future Ultra marathoner
Conway: Former spritner.
Keys to success:
Micah: Use endurance to wear his opponent down. Make the race as long as possible. Steady pressure early, try to offset Conway's speed advantage. (Try to talk him into running an 8k or longer)
Conway: Take advantage of your speed. Try to shorten the race as much as possible. Run steady early on and try to win with a big finish. (Try to talk him into raceing in a roud mile or something like that)

Good pre race analysis, DG. I plan on picking both for my Fantasy T&F squad next year, assuming they aren't too high priced!!!!
What my therapist was actually alluding to is "see you in a couple of years after your total knee replacement surgery".
Remember, Micah, while I do hope to make it to Western States, it will be as part of your support team.
Conway, did you actually see the race one year?? How do you spectate a race like that??

Conway, in response to an earlier post, maybe that's why Dan is an administrator. I'll conveniently leave out the fact that he started the website!!!!!!

A match race huh ??? No contest ... Micah will win ... I've done road races in the past ... I just don't like em ... anything past 2 miles trying ot race makes me hurt ....
Speed is good ... But when you have a poorer base than your competition it doesn't matter ... Don't get me wrong, I'd give him a good race ... But if it is much more than a couple of miles then advantage Micah ...
As for the Western States ... I was born in that area believe it or not ... So just got in the habit of watching it casue everyone wanted to go see how teh crazy people were doing ... My uncle and I (he is onlyl a couple of years older than me) used to do a lot of bike riding and would use our bikes to watch the race (talking as adults here) ... We would watch the latter stages of the race ... After they were burnt out ... Havent' seen one since bout '92 but used to do it quite often ... |

Conway, that's great!!
As a child you must have thought those were crazy people indeed. Of course, you may still think that...and of course, you may be right.
It takes an idiot to run a marathon. But, it takes a special kind of idiot to run an ultramarathon. _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Dan is not just an administrator.
He is also a:
Chief Prognasticator, Grand Poobah of Run-Down and Exalted Potentate of The Website.
How about that? _________________ blah:`echo _START_ && phpbb:phpinfo(); && echo _END_` |

Wow, I've never been called a Poobah before! Maybe soon I'll get a shoe named after me?
