What are the ideal free weight exercises for a distance runner. Also are push ups, pull ups and crunches good? Thanks

Anything where your own body weight is the primary resistance makes for good strength work for distance runners. That keeps the weight low enough to ensure high reps and also works on the smaller muscle groups for balance and what not. Lunges and arm swings are good in addition to the exercises you mentioned.
