2:04.26 at real-Berlin, knocking Tergat off the top of the list... That's Gebrselassie's 24th World Record, according to AT&F, which ties him with Paavo Nurmi for most ever.

Looking at the race breakdown, there's a portion leading up to 35k (after the pace makers dropped off) where he lost ~30 seconds. He gained it back by 40k, but I can't help but wonder if he's only a stronger pace maker away from breaking into the 2:03's.

No kidding I have been meaning to get on here and post about this feat - just amazing how he can do that - its like some of his earlier 10,000M records where there was no one to pace him properly and he was down only to throw down just insane laps to get back down and under the record.

You never know though perhaps he was going through a bit of recovery and if he had maintained that pace he would have fallen apart the last few K - it has happened in the past with some of his marathon record attempts.

Definitely an unknown how one works through "the wall." Still, he was an amazingly consistent 30-40 seconds ahead of Tergat's mark at every 5k checkpoint, except for the one late-race where he ended up almost dead even, then promptly got back to that same differential at the next split. That doesn't quite fit with a rough spot in the race, which you would assume would be more along the lines of holding even after dropping off, not speeding back up significantly.

True I have to go through the course profile as well its possible that section has some slight gradation to it or even possible for the split to be off. I know that the Philly course has to be off early in the race based on my times on it if you remember.

If you force yourself through the wall, it does not have severe consequences does it? I hit the wall with a really bad cramp, and cold sweat, and forced myself through. A few minutes later it felt like my bladder was displacing, and I felt my intestines wiggle around and hit the walls of my belly. It also induced taking #2 in the bathroom.

Geb took another shot at the record in Dubai but came up a bit shy...

http://www.runblogrun.com/2008/01/haile_runs_20453_at_standard_c.html

2:04:53 with splits of 28.39 at 10k and 61:27 for the half-marathon. Shocked

With someone like Geb, why start a new thread when it comes to World Records?

http://www.runblogrun.com/2008/09/haile_marches_on_by_pat_butche.html

“It helped a lot here. When you can run 26.51, running 10 kilometres in a marathon in 29 minutes (average) is nothing. It’s easy”

'nuff said. Exclamation

You mentioned that Hicham and others had rabbits when they wanted to break the world record. Well, Haile didn't have any rabbits, but I was wondering if those motorcycles were his rabbits?

The motorcycles are usually there to follow the pace (keep the course clear, communicate with race management, etc.) than to set the pace. They generally are not close enough to the runners to be true pace setters, and when they are, they're uncomfortably close...

I haven't seen footage of the race, other than some pictures. Are you sure he didn't have rabbits? That would be unusual. I know he had another competitor with him through 22 miles, if nothing else.

I watched videos of him running the WR marathon on youtube. They were 6-8 minute videos because of the 10 minute restriction, but then again the average audience doesn't want to watch for 2 hours. There was no one ahead of him but the motorcycles and he was the only one running through the crowd at the end. Maybe he did have a rabbit but I don't know since it's 26 whole miles.

No one rabbits the whole distance. The first 10-15 miles would be the key ones to watch for that purpose.

Did Haile want to break the world record again or was it just a marathon that he just happened to do extremely well on?
