Best sprinting event to train for sports speed

If i just want to be fast playing backyard football, soccer, etc what kinda running would you do. mind you i dont want endurance, i want acceleration.

i ran track in high school, sprints. i stick with 400m runs or less so as to not become a stick distance runner.

currently i run 100m sprints, but maybe 200m or 400m would be better? maybe a blend?

Hill sprints, short acceleration bursts while at speed, sprinting with a resistance harness or weight sled, explosive leg weight work, etc.

Distance running has better health benefits over the long term, and you won't quite become a "stick". Those guys that look like sticks have trained their bodies so much that they've pretty much altered it. It also depends on your body type. I saw this distance runner who had the body of a swimmer/football player. Oh well, I won't pressure you to choose distance running but if you like sprinting as a sport rather than how it makes your body look, then go with that.

3--step acceleration is the most basic way of getting ahead of the opposing player in many sports such as soccer, (American) football, or basketball.
Different events require different top--end speed when running in a straight line.
In soccer for majority of players a top--end speed of an 800m--specialist is enough; in football, on the other hand, a top--end speed and relaxation of the 400m--specialist is required.
In soccer running 3 to 6 miles during a game or stamina of 5 or 10K runner is useful; however, in football, an ability to run as hard as possible 20 to 40 times during a game for 5 to 15 seconds with around 25--second intervals in between is paramount.
In basketball running in a straight line besides the tree-step acceleration is not important. The side--to--side speed and quickness are crucial.
In baseball running 40 yards as fast as possible is probably even more important than in football; the distance covered usually vary in between the listed--before 3-step acceleration and at the very most 150 meters.

You mentioned the speed of an 800m specialist and the stamina of a 5K runner. What type of runners are you referring to for those two categories? 25 minute 5K runners, or 13 minute 5K runners?

I guess the only way to find out is to take someone like Ronaldo and run a 5K time trial. There is also one more thing to take into account. The duration of a soccer game is 90 minutes. Are you sure that the average soccerp layer only runs about 3.1 miles in 90 minutes? Ok, another thing just came to my mind. The level of soccer players. Someone like Ronaldo can cover a lot more distance than a 7 year old soccer player.

The soccer statisticians and sport scientistists have been studying a number of kilometers (miles) covered during the World Cup Finals' games by the soccer players who stay on the field the entire 90 minutes. Accoring to them in majority of the games on average a soccer player would cover between 3 miles, mostly during the 1950's and 1960's, to 6 miles, mostly during the 1990's and 2000's.

If you are talking about the super star attackers, in soccer, they are less involved into the defense or even the events in the midfield. Therefore, their 5 K or 10 K times may be no so great -- their 800m times and possibly even 100m times may be decent (e.g. 10.9 or 11.00 by Ruud Gullit, the former Dutch national team player and a coach in MLS. He started in Haarlem, and may end in Harlem).

The man with the "biggest lungs" is usually the midfielder who divides his or her time equally between aiding the defence and helping in attack. A man or woman who does most work for the team, but rarely shines himself or herself.
I remember that there was such a player on the Polish national team who participated in the World Cup'1982. Many fans were surprised that he was on the national team, but he himself said that every team needs someone just to run for others.

Thanks guys! This is some very helpful information. I myself is a sprinter but would love to have the capabilities to run long distance!
