It would seem that a good preventitive measure would be to wear sun screen, but is there a specific type for runners or a sweat resistant brand that works well in those conditions?

I've never cared for wearing sun screen when running, but if a runner is doing the long runs necessary for marathon prep then it is definately something to consider. I suppose a runner who is doing an hour or longer run should take the same precautions they would take if they were spending the same amount of time at the pool or working in the yard.
