I have a friend who is looking for advice for training his son. The boy is 8 years old and ran a 6:11 1500m in his very first race this weekend. Our concern is how much mileage should (can) an 8 year old put in. Any tips for this youngster would be appreciated.

At that age, I think general activity (including running) will be more beneficial in the long-run (no pun intended) than any serious running for sport. Give him a chance to just enjoy running, stay active and fit, and let his energy and interest dictate how much he runs. Once he's approaching junior high age, then it's more reasonable to approach the running in a serious fashion.
