Nice article. It really illustrates how financially challenging the sport can be. A world champion making only $10k for the year outside of two big wins? That's just wrong.

I do find Toth's comment pretty humorous... Innocent until proven guilty is an interesting concept when it comes to doping.

Very interesting ... To have all of one's annual earnings come down to a couple of competitions is rather scary ...

I've said for some time now that the idea of streamlining meets to suit those who are not interested in the sport, is really hurting the sport ... These meets where only half the events are held makes it real tough on a lot of athletes ... And it hurts a lot of events ...

Unless your event is already populated with name stars, you are not guaranteed enough events to make a decent living ... The IAAF really needs to take a look at this issue for the long term health of the sport ...

I'm entirely in agreement. The only way to make the reduced schedule work is to have a set rotation of events, regardless of popularity, where eveyone gets an equal chance to compete at an equal level (of meet) throughout the season.

As sad as it may be: track and field at the elite level is a form of entertainment, and as such must make profit. It should be still fresh in everybody’s memory what has happened to the turn—running event or 200 meters indoors – it was so grossly unfair that it stopped to be entertaining. It was pulled out from the schedule of all area/continental and world indoor championships. The filed events are nearly as bad, but for a different reason. It takes some dedication to sufficiently understand the field events to appreciate them.
