You mean one pair of spikes vs. another, or spikes vs. no spikes? Spikes are absolutely essential for sprinting, but not everyone prefers the same spikes.

I mean spikes vs. no spikes. I'm in 8th grade and currently running a 13.6 100 with regular running shoes. and like a 28.9 200. How much do you think spikes would increase my times? It's too late to get them for this season, but i could get them for next season! I knew that sprinters should have spikes, but our coach told us not to buy them cuz he wasn't sure who was sprinters, although i would think he would know that they'd help me. I'm the only sprinter on my team without spikes and i have like one of the fastest times. thanx!

I really have no idea how much time spikes improve on average. Probably depends too much on the individual to get much of a meaningful number.

A mid-distance spike will work pretty well for everyone (sprints, distances, and even jumps), so event uncertainty isn't a reason to hold off. If you're still growing and don't want to blow through a bunch of shoes, that's another matter...

Dan

p.s. Those times sound pretty good for 8th grade. We just had our JV (high school) districts and you would have probably won both the 100 and 200, beating mostly freshmen and sophomores in the process.

alrighty, thank you! well, my coach (sometimes i wonder how much he really knows about track) told me not to get them because i was a good distance runner too. (which i'm like totally not!) but i could switch shoes, because i really think spikes would help me sprints! But i parents didn't want me to get them because i have bad ankles, they roll easily and there's some tendon snapping thing, so i have to wear an ASO ankle (Ankle Support Orthodix) on both ankles, and i wrap my right leg w/ ACE bandage because of shin splints, and i have to wear custom made inserts because i have really flat, painfully flat feet, and that's what caused all my ankle, knee and hip problems in past. And my parents didn't think i could wear all those with spikes. What do you think on that. (i thought my feet were done growing, but i think they recently grew a little bit, but they're prolly done now) Thanks for putting in about my times, that was really nice of you, you didn't have to do that! Very Happy thanks!

Ah... Given all your foot and lower leg conditions, you probably won't get as much benefit from the spikes as you would otherwise, as their key advantage is light weight and flexibility (and traction, but that's more dependent on track conditions), and both would be negated by all your wraps and bandages. For now, your best bet is to focus on getting your legs healthy so you can run without all that stuff.

Well there's nothing I can do about having flat feet! I'm just born that way, and i need my arch supports to prevent further and new injuries! And there's nothing I can do about my ankle injury, I NEED my ankle braces. Shin splints, next year i could try to prevent them, not a lot i could do now. But there's pretty much goin to be no way around having arch supports and ankle braces. I'd be down in a flash if i didn't wear those! Any suggestions? Why couldn't I wear spikes with braces and inserts?

There are various stretching and strengthening exercises designed to counter a lot of that stuff, possibly to the point that you wouldn't need the artificial support.

Spikes are designed to be minimalist, and as such, aren't terribly conducive to adding things like ankle braces and arch supports.

There's nothing I can do for my ankles, about a year ago there were a couple growth plates that weren't finished growing and they said I could possibly outgrow my ankle problems, but that was a year ago, and i think those are done growing, so i'll be living with it for the rest of my life. Depending on how my knees go, i could have that for the rest of my life too. And there's nothing I can do about having flat feet except use arch supports, if i don't it will cause more problems. Not getting custom arches (i used to go with over the counter til about a year or 2 ago) soon enough was what cause a lot of my leg problems. If i don't wear my arch supports my shin splints will get worse and my noroma or aroma thing in my foot will get worse, the outer lateral tendon thing in my ankle will start slipding and snapping again, my knee caps will start pulling out again, causing the ligament on the inside of my knee to stretch and possibly tear, even with the PT I do, and my hips will be even more inverted. So I really need my arch supports, and my ankle braces, or i'll roll an ankle in an instant, trust me it's happened plenty of times. I've been seeing doctors for this stuff since i was like 7 or 8. If you have any suggestions on exercises please share them, and i'll be willin to try them if i'm not already doing them. thank you.

There's always something that can be done to address any given issue, but I'm always hesitant to recommend anything without seeing the person face to face and seeing the full picture. However, keep in mind, the amount of time spent in a pair of spikes is minimal, especailly for a sprinter. You can do all your training and warming up in regular shoes, complete with whatever bracing is necessary, and use the spikes for racing when you want to be light and fast.

Who has recommended all these thiings for you ??? Is this your own fix to the problems or has someone suggested that you do this ???

As Dan has said there are exercises that can strengthen the various problems thta you describe ... I have "weak" ankles and never wore braces when practicing or competing ... And have known lots of flat footed or nearly flat footed sprinters ... When sprinting the idea is to NOT have the feet hitting flatly as in middle distance or distance running so that should be overcome simply by technique changes ... You should be getting up on your toes anyway ...

doctors and physical therapists! As I said earlier I've been seeing doctors for these problems since I was 7 or 8! I have chronic ankle sprains in my right ankle, and i've sprained my left one a few times also. But they both have this tendon snapping thing. It's hard to explain, but the tendon snaps overmy ankle bone, and if it happens too much it will tear it. I have a special taping technique for that, but i still roll my ankles way too easily, and i do balance PT for that to improve my reaction time when i feel my ankle rolling. And trust me, I need my arch supports to run! neither of you are doctors! And I don't have weak ankles! I have very strong ankles from years of PT isolating my ankle muscles.

were they painfully flat footed? Or dangerously (as in could cause multiple injuries) flat footed? I doubt it. most people aren't, but as i said you guys aren't doctors or physical therapists, and you haven't looked at me/examined my legs, so i'm sorry but you don't really know the problem. And you don't seem to be accepting that i do need these braces and supports.

not if you'r born with it! i've seen dozens of doctors, many orthopedic specialists, and it's just the way i am. you can either accept it or be quiet, because you don't seem to be getting the picture here. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you don't get it! it's the way I am.

And our HS boys track coach, a VERY knowedgeable track woman, has instructed me not to run on my toes too much, because you don't get the power that you do if you use your whole foot, and snap your foot up to your buttocks and pull it through. And she has trained some VERY exceptional sprints. I doubt it coincidence. And at a track meet about a week ago, I accidentally got caught up running on my toes, about 50m in on my 100 leg of the Spr. Med. And one, I was just going up and down, which is what you do when you get on your toes, and two I had a horrible time because of it. I ran a 14.2 in that leg! and it was because i accidentally ran on my toes, I knew i shouldn't but once I got up i couldn't get back down. And because of that 50m of running on my toes, I have a noroma between all the toes in my left foot, (i was putting more weight on my left foot because of shin splints in my right that hurt like a mofo from lj earlier) I'm sorry this is so long, and i'm sorry if you don't like me. but i wanted to get my point across. Please don't cease to reply. i'd like to here what you have to say. thank you

Andrea

I'm sorry you feel that way. There's a ton more training and injury prevention knowledge here than you're apparently aware of... When it comes to track injuries, I'll put my common sense knowledge up against that of the medical community any day. And I certainly wouldn't be quick to second guess Conway's sprint experience...

"Toe running" does not actually mean to be up on the toes, rather the ball of the foot; also known as the strike plate. Anyone recommending against that simply should not be coaching sprinters.

sorry, i just read your post over again, and i have one thing to say, i was running on the balls of my feet at that track meet i mentioned, and a naroma (idk if my spelling is right on that) is on the top of your foot, above the ball of your foot, and it spans my whole foot, and is spreading to the top of my right now! so, yea, that really doesn't work for me!
